road bike for heavy rider

Good day all

I'm 120kg and loosing weight. I'm interested in the silverback strela 1.0. It has 32 spoke rims. Will this bike support my weight. Anything else I should change on the bike to support my weight? Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you don't want to break spokes their only 1 make of wheel for you - Spinergy their spokes are flexible PBO fiber which is 8 times stronger than steel. I do carry almost the full road range in stock email me on icycling1@gmail.com. Most agent would not recommend their product manufacture for a rider of your weight (some wheels even have weight limits) Spinergy don't. www.spinergy.com

How many Argus's did you do sub 3 on Spinergy's

That will convince him.

Ja I wouldn't worry too much about the bike choice - wheel choice is what you'd spend more time on.

And also tyre pressure being extra important for heavier riders. Pump up to the max pressure before every ride. A hand pump doesn't cut it (anyway, it's only there to get you home, not to pump tyres before a ride). A good quality floor pump with built-in pressure gauge is a must.

+1 on that comment. Wheels are the real factor for you. Rather spend a bit more upfront on a decent set - wouldn't really worry about the weight of the wheelset - look for durability. Mavic Kysriums are well known for being durable - but don't take my word for it - do a search ( hub and internet) and you'll get all the peace of mind you're looking for.

mind you, I was 110kg+ when I started on Alex Rims - was breaking spokes like you don't want to know! Got myself a set of Shimano RS10's and haven't looked back since - wheels are still true and have yet to have any spoke issues.

If you are 120 and losing weight, any 32 spoke wheel should work, provided you ride responsibly ie. avoid potholes, major bumps etc, lift your butt out of the saddle over bumps etc. There's no point in buying special wheels that you are going to dump in a few months time when you weigh 100kgs or less. At that weight, you will have a vast choice of good wheels available to you, that will carry the weight without a problem. Use the standard wheels that come with the bike, by the time you wreck them (which is unlikely) you will have lost weight and will be able to buy a good set of lighter wheels.

Have a set of 32 hole wheels built with Mavic Open Pro rims and you will have wheels for life.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I'm learning so much. I'll do some more reading on the wheel recommendations.

Hi Cyclebot, what wheelset does your future buy have. .....

Edit..... I see it has Alex Race 24 wheels. Find a wheel guru and let him check those wheels over. You can buy the fancy rims once you are sure what you want to know. Ignore the Hub experts.

Forget about the fancy wheelsets, the Spinergy's, the Mavics etc. Alex rims/wheels properly built will work. Also DRC rims properly built are bombproof. I still weigh what you weigh and we use DRC rims on our Tandem.

The common denominator here is PROPERLY built.
