Hi Guys,

I'm rebuilding my old GT hardtail as a training bike and I've got the rear derailleur (XT) setup so it's shifting as well as can be expected. What I have noticed is that if I push / pull the derailleur cage with my finger, the cage just sits where I left it. It doesn't spring back to it's original position.

Is there a way to fix this / should I ride it into the ground and replace?

Cheers,

Paulo

Rouxtjie!!! Thought about the SS option but got some nasty hills in the area so I think I may be better off with the gears for now :)

Cmon Conde....its a laugh and a blast, and the building up of it is as much fun as riding. PLUS you will get super strong and then make that zula sing

may be a touch of rust? drop the rd in a small tub of diesel for about 10mins (no smoking during this procedure!), fish it out, degrease with sunlight liquid and see if it's working any better.

if nothing's changed then it's probably time for a new rd.

You can disassemble some XT RDs. Which one do you have?

Shew - it's a stock standard 9-speed guy that came on my GT about 6 years ago.

Thus? These ones can be disassembled and cleaned out. There's a grub screw on the body next to the cage. It'll take a bit of fiddling to work out how it comes apart, but it's possible. Reassembly is exactly the reverse.

Nope - more recent than that one. Bit more like this but can't find exact one:
