My son (who will be three at the end of the month) has been riding a hand me down JD Bug for a few months now. He has been riding with his 13 year old brother and some of his mates around the garden as well as negotiating obstacles set up on my driveway with left over building material and scaffold planks (kids will be kids!)

Needless to say, the hand me down JD Bug is now in two peices.... I have no idea how they did it, but lets just say that repairing it is not an option!

I have been looking at a replacement for him and I came across this:

He was riding one of these

Is the first one a better option? Certainly looks cooler!! I reckon he will ride it for a year and a half max before going onto a pedal bike. He is 13kg at the moment (Takes after his mom) and the weight limit for the first option is 25kg.

Any opinions? Not considering any other options at the moment as far a makes go. Very happy with the JD Bug.

Take the lighter one - my 2 year old has annexxed his sisters completely, and drags it all over the place, and is just figuring out how to get it to roll when he sits on it (needs to grow another inch before he can sit on the saddle properly, but he still can get it going on the crossbar)

Which one do you have?

Have a look at this Swiss balance bike http://www.micro.co....2dbike-%2b.html

I had a look at that one (Amongst others. Including some wooden ones and the KTM Strider) Problem is that I can buy 3 JD Bugs for one of those and at the level that he is riding I can't justify the expenditure because at the end of the day he is going to be using it for max 1,5 years and he still has to push it!

The JD Bug that broke went through two kids including a teenager that tried very hard to Nitro Circus it (which is probably why this one broke... Not really designed to be jumped by a 13 year old....!) I know they can take abuse and the price is right.

But they break!

Look at the 3in1 then, a balance bike and a scooter!

Again, Swiss design and quality

Looks like a vacuum cleaner.... ;)

The only reason the JD broke was because a 13 year old tried to huck it off a 2 foot drop... The fact that my youngest was on it at the time that it snapped was circumstantial.

My Son has a Barney purple JD bug... my bikes have pedals. :)

You can get pedals for the JD Bug ;)

You can - but my LBS boss Jonene says they don't work well - she has never mislead me, and he has another 12" bike with pedals to try when he is a bit taller (also ex sis) - she has graduated to a 16" pink number -that weighs about twice what a bike should... maybe 3 times....

my son is 3 and has the first one (cool looking one), he absolutely loves it. He goes everywhere on it and it is awesome quality. His balance on it is incredible so i would recommend it to anyone. The 2nd option is the older one and in my opinion is not as nice, but you can add pedals whichis ok but by the time he wants pedals he hill have outgrown it anyway.

I meant for yours :P I was given a set by a mate. He reckons they were cr@p. Rather put the money towards a pedal bike.

The first (read: top) option is great. A mate has one for his lighty and he loves it. I don't think there is much difference between the two but the top one looks cooler (don't tell Clint_ZA)... I'm getting my daughter the top one as the pink ones just look ridiculous.

Ja, the pedals I am told are a waste of time and don't work that well anyway. I got a "new" set from a mate that he bought and tried but they didn't work that well.

I reckon the first one is the way to go.
