I recently purchased a silverback alpine 2008 model. I find the brakes ( tektro V's) work well until I hit the mud /water. I was thinking of upgrading to hydraulic disk brakes. Can anyone suggest the best brakes to buy price / quality wise?

1st of all, does your fork, frame and hubs allow you to convert to discs ?

If yes, then Juicy 5's are probably your best bang for the buck.

my fork and frame allows me to convert just not sure about the hubs. what do I need to look for on the hubs to see if they are useable?

It must have 6 threaded holes on the left side. Like this pic.
