Try n' get a pair of shoes that either have a flap to cover the laces or velcro straps - otherwise one shoelace in the crank and a face-plant later, you'll understand why

What is the best/cheapest way to get hold of some five tens...

Considering chucking away the clipless for a while! And they look supreme!

The best bet is to travel overseas and buy them when they go on sale in the local sporting store.

When we were in France, Peach saved about R500 on his Danny Mac edition 5.10s.

But if you're not going overseas any time soon.. the best bet is to wait for CRC to have a sale on 5.10s and hope customs doens't nail you on duty.

CRC Price

Local Price

But yeah, even with duty one saves a bit.

i like the pedals ma daai skoene!!! eish atrocious! what about skateboarding shoes??

Unfortunately there aren't many 5.10 riding options for ladies. The Karver is pretyt much it. Other options may include getting really small mens ones (Free Riders start at size 5), or try the ladies Freerunning/Parkour 5.10s. They still have stealth rubber on the soles.

As for skate shoes... they will work, but are not nearly as grippy as 5.10s. 5.10s really are one of those things (like dropper posts) that unless you've tried them, you won't understand how 'essential' they are.

Buy yourself a set of MOSH flat pedals - big, heavy, protruding pins help to keep your foot on the pedal - if that doesn't work, smacking your shins on them once or twice will ensure your feet never leave the pedals again ...

Thos mosh pedals have quite short pins. They also follow quite an old platform design (DMR V8's).

Something like these:

have longer pins, and a bigger, flatter CNC'd platform. Way better.

Also, I only wear laced shoes when riding, I'm super lay when it comes to doing up my laces, and have never had a lace cought in the crank ;)

i have had pedals hitting me on the shins before! scar from 1998 still therelaugh.png

I ripped by shin open from knee to ankle because of the wrong shoes. Not fun at all.

Get the right shoes.

Look there is gonna be conflicting ops here.. whistling.gif

But nothing F&^%$# a shoe up like griptape on a skateboard & the soles are made to grip to something as the minute grip of sandpaper.

Been sk8ing & using sk8 shoes for 25+years,they were used long before MTB "takkies" existed...

Pair of vans, etnies will do the job ,they always did ,dont need to be a total MTB fashion victim thumbup1.gif

Hi Catgirl smile.png Believe me, the FiveTen Karvers are the only way to go! Don't waste your money on skate shoes - the soles are nowhere near stiff enough for cycling. You're feet will not only get really tired, but they will also fly off the pedals when you go over obstacles. Also don't buy a pair of FiveTen women's hiking shoes. They may be prettier, but they don't have stiff soles either. The men are spoilt with many different FiveTen styles. For us it's only Karvers. The good news is that they do look better on than by themselves laugh.png If you wear a small size (like 5) they're really darned cute, in a chunky sort of way. They seem to be true to size, if you need to order online just go with the size you normally wear in casual shoes.

With the Karvers and good platforms I have never had my feet come off the pedals on any terrain.

If you want lighter platforms, look at Blackspire Sub4s - they are sub 400g. Mine are 375g for the set. You might want to replace the stock pins with longer ones.

Not many people around here like Crank Brothers, but I've been very happy with my 5050 3s for over a year now. They are extremely grippy and look great. Use the recommended type of Loctite when first installing the traction pins and you won't lose any (the most common complaint with 5050s). wink.png

Enjoy your platforms!

Neutron same as nano's,the extra 2 pins on the proton make all the difference.thumbup1.gif

You could prob ride with CROGS mellow.png on they so grippy. w00t.gif

I purposely went for the neutrons because they don't have the 2 middle pins. I find the middle pins tend to trash my shoes faster. Still plenty of grip without trhem... I personally can't notice the difference.

I bought a set of exustar pedals at CycleLab. It's pretty much the only semi-decent platforms I could find locally, but I'm quite happy with them.

Shoes-wise, I use Salomons and they seem to work well.

Never tried the FiveTens though, but I've heard that they're the best.

I understand that using skate shoes aren't ideal because they have really hard soles.

You see thats the key right there..

I dont like shoes that are too hard, especially for skating you cant feel your board or create the right pressure for flips etc..

Same as on my bike like to feel the pedals, not feel like there's a plank of wood between me and the pedals.
