Wasn't sure where the N7 is' date=' but looking on Google Earth it looks like the N7 has intersections and traffic lights, so it can't be a freeway.  Therefore, if there are no signs saying "no cycling", then it is perfectly legal to be on the road.

It does seem bike jacking is becoming more common.  The Hillcrest one worries me a bit as I often ride that route alone.  Last year I missed a bikejacking by about 5 minutes at the bottom of Fields Hill.

Sorry to hear of the incident.  We were actually having a discussion on whether or not the N7 is a freeway or not on the way to Killarney via Vissershok/N7 last night.  From the off-ramp near the Du Noon squatter camp (where the incident took place)  towards Cape Town I believe it can be classified as a freeway, but towards Malmesbury there are intersections/traffic lights etc.  A similar situation exists on the M5, where you can cycle up to the point where the blue route starts.

There is part of the N7 that you are allowed to ride. I think its up until the the Franse Conradie intersection from then on its a freeway.

If you have your drivers license you should know that cyclist are not allowed on freeways. I know there are times when one cant avoid riding a free to get some where, but when it can be avoided then please, please dont take that chance. If you get hit by a car, its your fault and the insurance wont pay out because you dont belong there in the first place

The N7 is going to be used in the Giro del Capo (stage 2) !!!! and local clubs have used a route that incorporates the N7 in some of their races where local traffic police have come out to control traffic at the van Schoorsdrift / N7 intersection. so by all accounts its ok to cycle on the N7. i have cycled from the Melkbos  / N7 intersection down to Potsdam extension on a regular basis since 1995. just avoid the Du Noon area after the new off/on ramp rather ride up the onramp to Tyger Valley Road.

Glad to hear you're okay ismail. You're absolutely right, the fother muckers are absolute cowards. Don't be afraid to fight back if they don't have a firearm. Try and get your bike between you and him or grab the nearest brick, rock... whatever you can find to defend yourself. As soon as they realise they can get hurt they retreat.

The portion of the N7 route from the Melkbos turnoff to its intersection with the N1 route is a provincial controlled trunk road and not a national road. The Road Traffic Act only prohibbits cycling on a road which has appropriately been marked as a "deurpad". So if there is a "deurpad" sign, he was illegally on the road, but to me that does not degrade the seriousness of the (cowards) attack and definitely does not give anyone the right to attack anybody else.
