Upgrading my wheels: need advice

Hi All

I have my birthday coming up soon and was thinking of getting some new wheels as an upgrade. I have a 2010/11 Giant TCR-2 that came with Giant S-R2 wheels. I have a budget of about R2000 and I weigh 76 kg. I have been unable to find the stock weight of these wheels so if you know, please let me know.

My reasons for upgrading are three fold. One I would like to get a slightly lighter wheel-set and secondly if possible a pair that match my bike/good looking and lastly will be very durable.

Some info about my cycling ability would help. I do it for fun and cycle for about 5-6 months of the year, it is social activity that I enjoy and do not take it to seriously. Weight (of the bike) is not the limiting factor in my performance but rather fitness. I do the argus in about 3h30-45 and the burger in about 3h15-30.

I would like to buy in CT or online locally if possible.

I have been looking at these:

i don't think those shimano wheels are going to be any better than what you've already got - they weight almost 2kg which is already on the heavy side (your stock wheels are probably already about this weight)

the real trouble is, lighter wheels come at a considerable premium, starting at about double your budget and going up exponentially.

I think your budget is a bit low if you want to upgrade. In the R4500 price range you can set of Tokens which weigh under 1500g.

Mavic Aksiums would be your best bet for that budget - I would save more to be honest if you want to feel a bigger difference with the upgrade.

As with the previous post you need to look around the 5k mark or higher.

Thanks for the input guys, its a present so not flexible on the budget but its pretty clear that its not worth it (although they would like siiiick!).

Or for that money y not lighter pedals and some carbon bars stem ect..

Wheels are your best option to lose weight as you better your rotational mass. Lighter bars and pedals are far more expensive.

Save till you get to R5500 and i will consider selling you my fullcrum racing 1 tubular wheelset. Only done 2 races with them so wheelset with cluster and gatorskin tubbies are practically new................................

Thats how I feel. I really liked the look of the wheels I linked and I thought there might be a semi significant weight difference compared to my stock ones. I am not nearly good enough for the weight savings that I would gain from pedals and stems when you factor in the high cost.

Thanks for the kind offer but I might abandon the wheel upgrade.
