Concept. Travel for three to four days on a bicycle in any what direction (preferably on dirt roads). Rest at random guest house, B&B and self catering. Slack packing, travel light with paniers on the bike to carry basic clothes, supplies and credit cards.

Guidelines:

  • Start and finish should be near rail heads, bus stations, or homes of friend or family (to facilitate concentration at start and finish, and safety of vehicles and stores).
  • Distance to be travelled in one day will be between 60km and 160km.
  • Mountain passes are good.
  • Must travel at least 80% of each days distance on isolated gravel roads or single track.
  • Routes must be proven to be crime free.
  • Overnight accomodations should be pre booked (meals either included or available in close poximity)
  • THe route should include places of interest (breweries, wine farms, historical landmarks ext).

Suggestions?

Option One: Queenstown to Cradock and beyond

Option Two: Klien Karoo.

Option Three: Sabie Pligrims rest and environs

Option 4,5,6?

Distances here are vast between towns and accommodations pot-luck. And Ricoffy Rules!

Best get set up for camping and carry supplies for a few days, but that obviously security issue. But then at least you can cook up a decent pasta for supper.

Even better plan a European trip: Italy, Spain, France, Ireland .... there you will find a village every 50-80 k's and a decent coffee stop and places to eat / stay / camp. Even if you don't speak the lingo, just go around and see what others are eating and let the waiter know what takes ur fancy.

Check out Hogsback to Alicedale or Port Alfred, we just finished a tour with a group of 8. Called it the Hog To Pumba (we finished at the Pumba Reserve with a game drive and lunch). Full back-up though, so no slack packing, but believe me the passes were awesome. Have a look at our facebook page : thecycleasylum or webpage www.cycleasylum.co.za We might be able to prebook accommodation or just give usefull info of the stops in the area.
