STI levers? Brakes? Me?

Lately I am finding it really hard to brake on my rd bike. It is a bit of a problem when you doing 50km on a downhill and you have to turn at the bottom. Add to that rain and wet roads and it becomes a really big problem.

Another thing (and trust me I don't need to start another Shimano vs whatever else is out there topic) is that if I rest my hands on top of my levers in order to be ready to brake I feel like I'd slip off and end up tangled into my front wheel.

Point here is I have unresponding brakes and it's worrying me. I could come up with 3 possible solutions but as I am a funrider I am not in the know on topics like these. So

1) there's something wrong with my levers, not working properly or not in the right position or who knows....

2) I may need new brake pads or something (although I looked this morning while washing off all the sand and mud and whatever else and they seemed ok)

and 3) It's me.....AGAIN.....weak hands, small hands, unskilled.....

I had a similar problem when I got my dual controls on my MTB. Similar but not exactly the same. Where on my MTB I felt my hands were too small and I couldn't press hard enough, the problem eventually disappeared as I got used to them and now I love them. But here I don't think it's a matter of getting used to the STI levers as I've ridden with them for months now.

Any input by the skilled?

If you have carbon wheels, switch to aluminium.

If you have standard Shimano brake pads, switch to Koosltop Salmon. Salmon is the colour, not the smell.

If you are using your rear brake, switch to the front. Rear brakes are very ineffective and in the wet, extremely ineffective.

Finally, wet weather does increase braking distance considerably, but you can negate this effect by technique and Koolstop pads.

Uuuuuhhhhmmmmmm OK so you firstly remove your chain pro......... oh wait no it's the roadbike, lets see

Have you always had that or only since you been riding the bike in the wet the last while? I find that when the rims/pads are dirty as happens now during this type of riding then braking power is somewhat reduced. Normally a good wash and ride out on a sunny day will sort that (OK so the wash is sorted I guess but a sunny day now thats more of a challenge ....)

BG, if you do change the brake pads, try the BBB Triple Compound type.

Secondly, move your HB upwards as a test to see if you're more comfortable.  As my hands are quite small as well, I moved the STI's and found that moving it upwards does help.  After the test you can drop the H/B and then have the STi's moved.

BTW, good to see you guys this morning.  Sorry for not chatting longer, but the Polar was moaning!

JB' date=' waar kan ek van daai vis briek blokkies koop?[/quote']

Hulle is so skaars soos hoendertande.

Ek koop gewoonlik aanlyn. Begin jou navorsing by www.koolstop.com.

Eagle Claw styl.

Hierdie blokkies is so goed dat styl by die venster uitgaan. Koop wat jy kry en maak pas.

Good to see you too and if you find yourself our side of the world you should come ride with us. We went past you quite fast cos we were in a bit of a hurry.....one of us was late no names mentioned Big%20smile

Yeah I think I'll try move the levers and maybe try new brake pads....

And BB....braking in particular has been a recent development so yes rain could be it. The slipping off my levers though has been a concern for a while. I wear full finger gloves for numerous reasons and that doesn't make it any safer I think.

And thanx Johan for the advice. I actually use both my brakes together. Might be wrong but coming from MTBiking where going downhill using your front brake might make you hug the rocks around you so might be a bad habbit but I visualise very bad things happening if I only use my front brake...

Johan, dankie.  Just spoke about the BBB 3 compound brakes as I've heard reasonably good things about them.

BG, no problem.  Will try and speak to epoh at some stage.

Ewep I use the triple compound brake pads and have found them to be pretty good, certainly helped with the rim overheating problem I had in Suikerbos.
