Don't you guys realise how good we have it down here?

Regular races, all within a 100km return trip, with the exception of one or two. Very reasonable Entry fees (races up North cost in the region of R170.00 and up, and then there is major traveling involved, remember you have to travel to register / collect your race entries.) Here you get your Annual PPA number, you enter Online, and then you just rock up at a race and ride. Minimal hassles.

You pay a nominal fee, and then you don't need to belong to a Club. Up North you have to belong to a Club, with all the costs involved, and then you must still pay an Annual fee to CSA, who does very little to nothing for the everyday cyclist.

Complaining with a brown bread under the arm, and a slice of cake in the hand.

But we can and should keep getting good! WP cyclist are very lucky because of a few hard men in the 90ties who managed to trade 50% of the ownership of the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle with Rotary for instead of just 10% of (if I recall correctly) entry for 50% of the profit of this event. This is a road cycling event which PPA is the cycling beneficiary off - over the past about 10 years PPA has not been able to spend all the money they have got from this event (well they could have if spent more if they kept events like the Giro del Capo going) and just been investing (wisely), but not it's time (hopefully not to late) to invest in road cycle. We getting to the possible point where the statement don't bit he hand that feeds you may come into play. How successful will the ACT really be if it the only road fun ride left?

The other part of PPA which has been successful is the fact we PPA has a calendar - but if this calendar is not been filled - some other private promoter will come in and put on events and yes the entry will by 2 to 3 times higher - and we the WP cyclist will just have to suck it up because they will be the only road event - PPA really do need to consider funding road funride / races next summer season!

Just because organizer are based in certain areas and have venue in these areas and now these venue are not suitable due to road permission - PPA is quite capable of filling the calendar with other road event in other areas - whether they put them on themselves or partner with other organizers! This we a the road cycling members should be "demanding" (I hate using that word) they do. We as the road riders should not be short changed! It still surprises me that PPA organizers fee for road riding is twice that of MTB event yet all event have some subsidy from PPA though the ACT a road event.

When is PPA going to wake up?

Never!

They have their little list of things to do.

Hard work like think up New routes and planning with local Funride Org is not on their list.

Every year new races appear and disappear.

The PPA have such a Large membership base and yet struggle to satisfy any one form of cyclist,

Road, Mtb or Xc.

There is no point in PPA when there is no more Events!

How about some Red Hill lap racing? This has been done in the past. Andrew Wheeldon does it every year with minimal funds through his BEN Bikes NGO. Very little traffic to contend with down there.

Yep like the Penguin Ride of before , Start Simonstown, 2 x Redhill gives you 50Km. So start in Fish Hoek.

Does anyone know if there is an option to get membership fees refunded? I paid that fee on the understanding that I would be getting the same cycling in return as they have provided for many years. I have not been to the Northern Suburbs rides this year and don't intend on going in summer either so will be getting zero value from my membership by the sound of it. I live a few hundred metres from the regular starting venues in the South and hence really enjoy those races, but can't spend a fortune travelling to and entering the races in the North. Sounds like the only option is a 50km sprint which probably isn't worth R100+ entry fee.

Exactly what I was thinking. So I forked out a good few ZARs for a minimal discount on the Burger, ACT and 99er entries??? I want my PPA membership refunded.

Would love to ride 3 x 150 km stage race through Ceres, Paternoster, Barrydale, etc!

C'mon, PPA.

You can't even hang onto a 80km flat race along the coast 1 day event, never mine 3 days with some serious climbs at 150km per day.

I think you're confused, Colonel. Thinking you're my coach.

I understand that one ride is appealing the Southern Suburbs ban... as far as I know, there is just our ride confirmed in this area between now and the Argus.

From PPA newsletter, provisional calendar for Summer 2013,

Summer 2013 events

We are in the process of finalising the details for the Summer 2013 events – amongst others, the road works in the southern suburbs (Fish Hoek area) has meant that no events can go over Boyes Drive, Main Road around Kalk Bay, or Ou Kaapse Weg. As you can imagine, this has posed quite a challenge to the organisers. However, alternative solutions have been found, as follows:

JANUARY 2013

Sun 6 Jan: Journey for Sight. New venue and route from Fish Hoek

Sat 12 Jan: Potential new MTB trail opening in the Greyton area – watch this space

Sun 20 Jan: Cyclelab funride – route and venue to be confirmed, but possibly in the Boland area

Sun 27 Jan: Bouckaert-Soenen league, road and MTB funride. Usual route and venue in Paarl

FEBRUARY 2013

Sat 2 Feb: Franschhoek Lion Porcupine MTB Challenge, Franschhoek

Sun 3 Feb: Tour de PPA. New route and venue, Durbanville

Sat 9 Feb: 99er Cycle Tour, Durbanville

Sun 17 Feb: Medallion Tour de Stellenbosch. Usual route and venue, Stellenbosch

Sat 23 Feb: Wellington Lions MTB (MTB only)

Sun 24 Feb: to be confirmed – Bay City Cycle Tour

MARCH 2013

Sat 2 March: Cape Argus Pick n Pay MTB

Sun 3 March: Cape Argus Pick n Pay MTB

Sun 10 March: Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour

Sat 16 March: PPA Wacky Wheels Overnight Fun tour

Sun 17 March: PPA Wacky Wheels Overnight Fun tour

Information will be uploaded to the calendar section of this website as soon as possible.
