I really believe it's PPA job to promote all cycling and that includes the Southern Suburbs fun rides. I ahve been hearing stories of lack of funding as a reason why the SS rides are no more, it costs R30k for traffic control etc.

So WHAT? PPA and Cycle Trust make millions from the World Championship Fun Ride every year, plough some of that back into what must some of the best amateur fun ride/racing in the world around the Point.

That's how you promote cycling, let people ride in safe and orgnised routes on roads with beautiful scenery and great climbs.

I do not see anyone else trying to organize road races and if we shun the PPA and they stop organizing the races how many would be left on the calendar.

If PPA stop organising races they cease to have meaning?

So what you're saying here is that PPA are the only service provider so we must just take what we're given and get on with it? Never mind that they are sitting on our money whilst our races get cancelled?

At the very minimum I'd like some open and honest communication from them regarding the funds they have in reserve and what they intend to do with them.

How about some Red Hill lap racing? This has been done in the past. Andrew Wheeldon does it every year with minimal funds through his BEN Bikes NGO. Very little traffic to contend with down there.

Sounds awesome.

I need gradient to race after a tough Spring.

As I said in my earlier post I agree about the reserve funds and the need to use it for the good of cycling and not have it sit and gather dust.

That said at the moment yes they are the only providers. Until someone else comes along with the will and the sponsorship we need to suck it up. I am not saying do not make legitimate complaints but slating them for something that is beyond there control is a wee bit harsh.

It's not harsh when they refuse to address the issue. They're also not the only outfit capable of putting on races. If I didn't ride for a road team I would have no issue whatsoever cancelling my membership and hitting the mountain every chance I get.

Fair enough.

They might not be the only ones capable but from where I am sitting they are one of the only ones actually setting races up..

Seems like no amount of money thrown at the City Of Cape Town could've changed the outcome.

The clincher for me is that they are the ones with the funds - our money - available to do it. Others like Cyclelab - will run it as a business, Hendrik Lemmer - small budget, WPCA - also lack resources - are capable of putting on events and have done so in the past.

Anyways, like I say, I'll wait to see what happens when the summer league races are announced. I'm not getting up at 3.30 every weekend to race in the Boland, seriously I'm over it. I look forward to my local events every year and when they are gone so is my interest in belonging to PPA.

I'm with you on this one, probably one of the main reasons i didn't race spring. Seems i can start pimping my commuter mtb. Fun times ahead.

As for PPA doubt I'll be giving them my money next year.

There's that saying from Karl Platt, @babse how does it go, ...... .mtbing is a lifestyle
Edited by Meezo

One of the reasons why I am no longer a member of the PPA.

Hardly any races in the Southern Suburbs.

Often the races also are not very safe. Crossing a railway with a small mat while the bunch is ten times wider and guess what happens, a crash.

I ride for fun now days. Might not be as fast as I used to be but I'm saving a load of money and get to look after my own safety which I honestly don't think the PPA does.

Bigger wheels and lower speeds.

Thin wheels and crossing the railway not at the right angle at high speeds... Not so lekker.
