i just found out that i have ridden my bike without replacing the chain for WAY WAY too long.

chain started slipping...badly.

replaced chain & cassette - derailleur started "Stuttering"

replaced rear derailleur wheels - slightly better, but still unacceptable.

Chainrings next.....

Sigh.....FML (totally my own fault tho)

How often must you change the chain.

Erm, the derailleur is "stuttering" ... have you checked the adjustments before rushing off to buy all this expensive stuff?

Yes Thoroughly.

what is happening now is the new chain is getting hooked by the chainring when it should be released, this only happens under load.

chainsuck???

Here is my drivetrain lifecycle...this is not a science and purely my opinion before somebody rips me apart

Start with everything brand new...new chain, cassette, chainrings

I can normally run 3 chains before I need to replace the cassette

And then I normally run 2-3 cassettes before needing to replace the chainrings...middle will most likely go first.

When I am on the last cycle...last chain last cassette...I run the whole thing into the ground until its unbearable...start with everything new, wash, rinse, repeat.

It probably would end up as chainsuck if i go for a proper ride.

this is like prechainsuck on every like 1/4 rotation.

i have woken up WAY to late.....as the voortrekkers used to say.

You have checked for bent teeth on the chainring with the issue?

I'm not sure what you are observing on your bike. I'll have to look before I can voice an opinion. Howerver, chainsuck happens under load or under slack and equally so. Since it is a phenomena in the slack cycle of the chain circle, it doesnt know when the chain is under load.

Your 1/4 roation observation is more accurate. Chainrings wear only on one half of the chainring. The wear happens where the chain is engaged during the more powerful arc of your pedal circle on the left and right leg. In other words, if you look at your right crank face-on with the crank in the horizontal position, the most worn section will be at the top of the circle from say 12:00 O'clock to 3:00 O'clock (for the right leg( and at the exact oposite side for the other leg. Therefore chainsuck will be most prevalent when those wear spots are at the "25 to" position on the crank. Like you observed, if feels like chainsuck happens in quarters.

It is easily observed if you have a clean chain and you have a helper ride the bike in a circle around you. You keep your eye on the rear derailer and you will see it jump as the chain just-just attempts to suck.

It is happening on all rings (middle is worse than the others)

And ja JB, i have been riding around the office in circles all morning, with my colleague as a spotter.

we are both of the professional opinion that the chainrings are klaar.

Enjoy your weekend okes, i am going shopping.

Your Chainrings are worn. It is chainsuck that causes teh chattering - I had the same thing. New Cassette, New chain, New Jockey wheels. Still had the problem. Replaced the Chainrings and it was sorted. You could see how badly they were worn when compared to the new ones.
