Zenbaas Posted December 2, 2012 Share I see there aren't too many topics on helmets. As me and the SO are starting out I'm curious what you guys and gals are wearing. Also where is a decent place to buy that won't ripp you off. Other than that where are good places to shop for decent chamois and what brands should we be looking out for.? What other tools and accessories would you consider essential for newbies.? Appreciate any input
M L Posted December 2, 2012 Share Helmet you buy what is on special and comfortable. Very happy with my rudy project I bought for R450. Have a look at cwc or buycycle. Sportsmans warehouse also has some good specials now and then. Chamois, heard good thinks about the fox shorts. First accent has bad build quality in my opinion. Other accessories, a stand pump, chain lubrication, a multi tool, water bottle and bottle cage is the basics. Also maybe spoil yourself with a pair of pedals and shoes. raptor Posted December 3, 2012 Share Using a Rudy project Sterling or rudy project Windmax both great helmets, got a good deal from bikewear.co.za
Zenbaas Posted December 3, 2012 Share Thanks for the replies! Agreed on first accent... I have quite a few hiking products from them and they honestly haven't held up well at all. I always thought the rudy project helmets cost an arm and a leg... R450 must have been a lekker bargain <img src='https://cdn.bikehub.co.za/forum//public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Edited December 3, 2012 by Zenbaas
Minion Posted December 3, 2012 Share Buy a helmet based on how it fits and feels. You don't get more protection from a more expensive helmet (you may actually get less). The extra cost comes from making it lighter or giving it better ventilation while trying to maintain the same level of protection. Linden Cycles have reasonable prices on helmets. I wouldn't buy my first helmet online unless you can return it easily if it doesn't fit.

Cav' Posted December 3, 2012 Share Dont buy a helmet online, you have to make sure of the fit first hand.

scotty Posted December 3, 2012 Share I have 2 Giro's and find they are good value and pretty strong, iv'e survived 2 accidents and a paving stone drop. Anatomic have good quality that does not break the bank, they have an outlet in Northcliff (DF Malan drive)

Cippo Posted December 3, 2012 Share Started with a RP Zuma. Very comfortable good value. Went on to a Spez Prevail which is extremely light, good ventilation but padding a bit skimpy. Currently wearing a Kask Mojito. Most comfortable helmet I have ever worn. Good ventilation and light and awesome padding.
