Rusty bolts - any proven remedies?

I have a seatpost stuck in my steel frame - would the coke work here as well?

Hacksaw will do the trick........

Try heating up the frame with a torch and pull it out.....just like you heat up a stuck jam lid under the hot tap

SS bolts are fine in non stress applications

Useless if under tension.Shear is fine

SS work hardens

If the bolt is magnetic it is a ferritic SS and won't work harden. It also falls between a 8.8 and 10.9 grade so it is pretty hard as well as tough. No problem using SS bolts on a bike.

Coke is the cheapest and easiest. The sugar content in that stuff is crazy good at removing rust and blemishes from metal.

Put in glass of coke (full fat version) and leave for 15 to 20 minutes. Crazy.

It's NOT the sugar that does the damage (i.e. removing rust) ...it is the phosphoric acid that does that...yes, coke has a small amount of phosphoric acid in it!! Nasty stuff...go figure why Coca Cola is not too good you...luckily we are mainly made of flesh...not metal!!

It's not the sugar - its acidic, and it's the acid that does it - real lemon joice works too.

Just make sure you degrease the bolts first.
