Open water swims in Joburg...

I went for a swim in Emmarentia yesterday, the water was clean by the jetty but not as clean closer to the inflow, I think it's probably from the recent rains. Open water swimming was pretty tough for me, no sides to hold onto when you're tired :D. I'm gonna train a bit more in the pool before going again.

you wearing a wetsuit? if so flip over and lie on your back if you need to take a break... you will bop around like a lifebuoy - very relaxing (and you will be able to see those paddlers coming)

Haha, I did end up having to do that and a bit of a doggy paddle to get back to the jetty.

Went and swam at Emmarentia yesterday, but I don't know if Thursdays are such a good day to go - I think the canoe club has something going on Thursdays - there were so many paddlers.

They were all going counter clockwise, so swimming in the same direction as them, meant I was looking straight into the sun every time I looked up to try and get my bearings, that coupled with goggles fogging up, meant I really could not see a thing....was not all that pleasant of an experience, but at least I managed to get a bit of practice with the wetsuit in before Sunday's 5150

Hey Guys.

Whats your take on swimming at Emmerentia over weekends? Say Saturday &/or Sunday mornings? Would it be safe? Is there a lot of other people utilising the dam eg. paddlers?

I swam on Sunday (8am). Apart from some wetsuit issues it was quite pleasant. Milkworx, did you go earlier?

Went for a swim Sunday at Emmerentia. Very nice!! Water clean etc etc

Note to self... Recommend to go either around 06:30-7:00 or after 09:00. The canoe club has something going on Saturdays & Sundays (Time trial by the looks of it?) between 08:00 & 09:00 and it can get a little hectic with 15-20 odd canoes trying to keep head above water.

Yeah - there were quite a lot of paddlers. I stayed inside the buoys though and it was ok. As I was swimming alone I was sort of hopeful that if I went under one of the paddlers would fish me out...

I guess it was you (Weppie) I met in the parking lot on my way in?

Haha, that's how I felt when I swam there.

I want to go one morning this weekend, is anybody else planning a swim?

I won't be there this weekend as I am swimming at the Rockman Tri. I would like to incorporate a swim there more often on the weekends and maybe carry on on the mtb on the Spruit afterwards as a brick session. I just need the motivation.
