I've been looking at durable, light weight wheelsets. I ride tough terrain. One of my bike shop dealers recommended American Classic 29 Tubeless wheelsets.

I am new to this brand and would appreciate some inputs before I commit to the purchase. I read a review on bike radar, but need more inputs from guys who actually own a set.

My wheight is 71kg.

I've read on TheHub that people find the alloy to be very "soft". I.e. they dent easily when the rim hits a rock through the tyre.

Do a search, quite a lot of opinions on them.

Howzit Llewellyn... as you know, theres generally a trade off between strengh and weight.

I have been riding American Classics '29 hard for the past year over all kinds of terain and have had no issues at all. Im very happy with the set.

I'v been bashing mine around for ages and they are still dead true and 100%.... Something i really like about the rear hub is the steel inserts on the freehub body to stop the cassette chowing into it....

I have the first version and still maintain they are the best bang for buck wheel around. That said I have had the bend the rim shoulder back into place a few times where I smacked rocks.

The new version has lost the plot a bit in terms of price.

If I was going to buy a new set of wheels it would probably be the Mavic Crossmax.

I can't wait for Shimano to bring out the XTR version of their MT75/XT wheel - that will be a winner!

Shoe, XTR is a bit above my budget.

I ride the lighter Race version and I`m very happy. At 71kg you are well withing the weight limit for the Race version.

Yeah, had a long, boring discussion with the minister of finance (wife) in my family. Unfortunately I wont be able to get the race set, but i guess the all mountain set (150g heavier) will suffice.

My current wheelset came with the bike. Syncros? hubs, DT swiss black spokes and alex rims rim. Just wondered if this upgrade to american classic will really make such a huge difference?

I'm a bit new in the mtb world. Left road cycling a year ago and havn't looked back since. These american classic wheels, will they out perform my current 29 wheels (syncros? hub, dt swiss spokes and alex rims rim on a scott scale 940) at my weight of 71kg? And if so, why?
