And is it worth it? It was an awesome show a few years back (when Macca won it) but since then the quality have been appalling.

The quality isn't great ... it is basically the same as the live stream. I watched it in three parts on the IDT ....

The NBC show is also on youtube now (search for ironman kona 2013 and it is uploaded by bananaraama or something like that), have not watched the whole thing yet but it looks decent. With the gopro sponsorship I am sure they would have improved the quality of the show

Cool - ill give it a look!

The problem with the official footage is it just shows the leaders and not much of the race between 4th and 10th.

Dear athlete,

In an effort to make the swim leg of IRONMAN South Africa a safer and smoother process, we are looking at the possibility of using swim times as a seeding requirement to divide the waves.

The recent changes to the IRONMAN South Africa route, being prompted by the selling out of the event, has led to some structural changes such as the swim start now being broken down into three separate waves.

  • Wave 1 – PROs: 06:30
  • Wave 2 – Age Groupers : 06:40
  • Wave 2 – Age Groupers: 07:00

In order for us to seed athletes into the two age-group waves, we are looking factoring in previous swim times. It is important to note that wave 2 and wave 3 will be of equal size.

In order for us to accurately seed athletes according to previous swim times we ask that you please send us your most recent swim times no older than one year. Please include the event and in which year your time was achieved.

The following information is required:

  • IRONMAN distance swim time - 3.8km
  • Half Iron distance swim time – 1.9km (only if you have not completed a full distance IRONMAN event)
  • Olympic distance swim time – 1.5km (only if you have not completed a full IRONMAN or half Iron distance event)
  • If you do not have one of the above times please indicate to us that you are a first timer

Please send us your swim time by close of business on Friday 27 November. Athletes who do not have the above times and those we do not receive by 27 November will be seeded according to age group.

This seeding system is designed to avoid the faster swimmers having to swim through large groups of athletes ahead of them and for the faster female swimmers having to swim through groups of the slower male swimmers.

Send your times to Sharon at sharon.talbot@ironman.com

Regards,

IRONMAN South Africa Team

Few things to note... I like the idea of doing this. I will most likely end up in the last wave but so be it. They are however only considering it so we should not assume this is how it will be done for now.

What do you guys think will be Wave 2's cut off time? 01h15?

Bwaaahahahaha!!

It seems if you have done IM 2013 then that is the time that will be used end of story... If not then they will look to Half/Olympic Distance times.

The most important thing here (for me) however is that the last wave still starts at 7AM.

Same here, haven't done any other event since this years' swim which was a slow one at 1.19.

What do you guys think will be Wave 2's cut off time? 01h15?

I would think the top 40% of last year field (swim time) would be in the 1st wave - what was the times of those peeps?

Ok I will try and quantify this......

1,540 athletes

Best time - 49min

Slowest time - 02h18

The 50% split (athlete number 770) swam a 01h16

Top 40% of athletes (number 616) went through at 01h13 and 30 seconds

I would therefore be inclined to believe that if you have 01h15 or faster time on record - you could be in wave 2....

If not wave 3....

Nice analysis. On that basis wont bother with an email.

Really hoping to be in wave 2. Swam almost exactly 1:15:00, so I guess I'm pretty close to the dividing line...

Also remember, though, that not all the athletes from this year will be competing next year, so I'm guessing that if you're in the first 60% or so this year, you might have a chance to get in wave 1.

You have to Davem

I think if you don't then you will start in wave 3. If you send mail even with a 01h20 time who knows....

Also not sure how they calculate the 70.3 times to compare to IM... do they double it plus another 10minutes? Means of you swam a 40 minutes on a 70.3 then they seed you at around - 01h30 ?

I swam 01h14 and 59 seconds.....

If I can start at 06h40 I may even realise my dream of finishing an IM in daylight!!

I think that looks about right - do you think people would think that is fair or acceptable
