The Village Bicycle Project

Hey all. (Well mostly Cape Town Downhillers) I'm thinking of putting together a bike to be used for kids looking at trying their hand at DH. I'm sure there's a few MX kids out there and Dirt Jumper kids who would like to give it a bash but aren't willing to lay out the cash for a maybe. Adult kids are more than welcome to try too.

I have a spare frame in my garage that is is pretty much brand new condition that would be a great starting point for a project like this.

I've managed to scrounge together a few parts but I still need a few items before we can get building. These are the things I've managed to get together so far.

Frame

Shock

bb

Cranks

shifter

derailleur

cassette

front wheel

Brake Rotors

Bars

Seat

grips

I still need some big ticket items and I'm appealing to you guys to go have a scrounge in your garage to see if you've got the following items. I can't buy the stuff and from the list above you can see I've already made a significant contribution towards the build. I need the following items.

Seatpost 30.9

Headset 1.5

Fork. A 203 would be preferable but I'll take a 180mm single crown.

Rear wheel (or a wheelset cos the front wheel I have weighs the same as the Moon)

brakes

stem

Chainguide iscg05

If there's something I've forgotten or you have a better item than I have please feel free to donate that.

This is NOT going to be Duane's spare bike. I assure you of that. If I can get it together it will be available at races for use by people wanting to try out DH. And on weekends in the presence of a responsible person.

Cheers.

Duane.

Update.

I've been offered another frame and some brakes. Anyone with a nice DH fork they are looking to donate?

Oh and a rear wheel.

You sir are a scholar and a Gentleman. I'l take it. Ill take the hub too. Now I need to figure out how to get it here.

I have a brand new 2011 Turner DHR frame that i was going to build up but I've been offered a Santa Cruz VP free that will be a far more logical choice for that fork and the components I have.

I've also scored a Direct mount stem. Does that fork take a direct mount? Kinda looks like it. I've got a Carbon THE helmet that I've retired to go along with the bike. I'm planning on approaching Trail & Tar (They don't know yet) to store the bike and help me put it together.

They are in Tokai so hopefully people will have easy access to the bike.

I'm going to keep the DHR frame (Its SUUPER sexy) and hold out for blingy parts. So maybe we can end up with 2 village bicycles. One entry level guy and one super blingy pimped Turner.

Please don't be offended. Last night I got into trouble from someone cos I supposedly took props for this "village bicycle" idea. Just for the record This isn't about my ego. It's about getting kids who wouldn't normally get the opportunity to try their hand at riding a DH bike.

The only thing outstanding is a rear hub which my mate Richard has kind of said he'll supply.

Thanks Nigel.

Nope sorry it wont run a direct mount stem - this predates such things

I will get it boxed and see how much postage costs and then you just give me back the cash ... i'll just send you my bank details

Easy!

Just don't teach the innocent kids about Village Bicycles yet... .
