Bike boxes for air travel: domestic flights

Those who travel by air and have to take a 29er mtb along:

 

What bike bag/ box do you use?

 

I will be competing in the Eastern Cape in July at the XCO champs but have to be in Cape Town for work the week before. So need to fly JHB - CT - PE - JHB with my 29er.

 

Any suggestions?

 

I am looking at the bikesafe box as an option but do not want to buy one for just 1 trip.

 

Anyone renting bikesafe boxes or have a bikesafe box I can rent for the week?

Just get a cardboard box from your lbs

I will never again travel with a cardboard box after what they did to my dad's. Whole corner of the box was missing and lots of holes in it.

 

We now travel with the Thule boxes and they are fantastic.

My 29er fiets don't fit in Thule box. But it is a great product.

BikeSafe is nice, but HUGE. Swallows my large 29er, or my Tri-bike with ease.

Can't fault BikeSafe.

Likely to fit any bike.

Can be a bit cumbersome though, and owning one requires it's own storage room/garage. LOL

Also using the Bikesafe box. It is a bit of a push to get in under the international weight limit for oversized luggage, but a hard shell box at least helps to ensure that there are no surprises on the other side.
