Second hand syringe needles are supposed to be destroyed by medical practices, not given away as grease guns... if you do manage to get one, then sterilise it properly before using it - just in case you cut yourself with it or stick it in yourself - pouring a kettle of boiling water over it should be good enough.

You can also consider blunting the needle on a fine stone before you use it too, and store it with a cork stuck on the needle.

and PLEASE - KEEP it OUT of reach of kids....

I'm actually referring to using the SYRINGE only!! No bloody needle near me! I'll be prone to stick myself ...and i prefer heroin over molybdenum... :whistling:

So, just a big ass ol seringe...the nossle alone is just large enough to dispense a nice bead of grease for any bike application!

Very much different mechanisms at stake here. The effort exerted by bicycles does not warrant any specialised lubricants.

I (we actually) have to agree with this....

a MTB operating under "normal" use...as a slightly different horse from a V8 operating under "normal" conditions...

no way you'll ever spin your hubs & bearings at any RPM's nearly high enough where specialized grease come into their own....

Now we go into points of pressure and pivots increasing the force acting on a point.

My math is not what is was so I will give in to the clever people who can calculate RPM, shearing action and coefficient of friction and heat loss etc.

I am too stupid. Nothing like knowing your limitations

I am happy with 460

I use any grease as long as it's clean.

I've been using Marine Grease lately because I had some. It's gooey and it makes packing open bearings awkward. Seems to be working though. Getting to about time I service them again but they still seem to be running smooth.

automotive/multi-purpose grease isn't the best option for bearings, so the cheap "midas" grease isn't the best. With that said, any grease should work just fine because a bicycle bearings do not work as hard or as often as bearings in heavy industrial applications where grease selection and properties are essential.

better safe then sorry. Edited by feetup

Hi Everyone,

So once we have chosen grease, how do I clean out the old grease and dirt before replacing the grease. And can you buy replacement dust caps?

I am now pushing my luck as I head further off topic but any pointers on where to get and what to look for in a torque wrench?

Thanks Paul

This is the cheapest one I've seen lately. I bought one and it seems to work just fine. http://www.evobikes....que-wrench.html.

There's also this one which is a different make but the picture is identical. http://www.easybike.co.za/mighty-torque-wrench-set-2-24-nm.html

There are 3 sets of bearings that need to be serviced (in order of importance):

Edit: More on Wheel hub service:
