Exciting new trails are being built by the Southernmost Foundation in and around Bredasdorp. The trails cater for a wide spectrum of mountain bikers, from the very fit and proficient to those who just love to spend time on their bike in unspoilt nature.

The trails all start in the town itself and loop around in the surrounding countryside and mountains. They range from fast and flowing single track through bluegum plantations, farm roads and jeep track, to very technical climbs and fun descents. Almost 30km of single track has been built, including a slow ascent along single track switch backs through the nature reserve to the top of the ridge to the west of the town. From here undulating single track, fast fun descents and a few short steep climbs take you south to breathtaking views across the Agulhas plain to the sea.

The descending trail can be exhilarating if ridden at speed, but also very safe if ridden slowly. The track is extremely well built with good drainage and the bridges and stiles are sturdy and wide enough to cater for all. New trails are continually being added, and Naas hopes to have 50km of single track soon. For more information please contact him through the Southernmost Foundation

For those looking for something different the local BMX track can be a good technical and fitness test for the more adventurous. A trick jump is also situated next to the BMX track for those few who like serious air time. The BMX track is also a fun venue for children who just want a few hours of fun riding.

For photos please visit their facebook page (FACEBOOK) or a brief description of the opening day ride on the Gansbaai site (Bredasdorp). There is also a short video of a section of the BMX track (bmx video)

Looks awesome! Well done to Naas and the Southernmost Foundation youngsters. Can't wait to ride the trails - now another MTB attraction in the Overberg.

Great I am there but please add some more info on the trails. I could not find any descriptions of the different trail options, difficulty, profiles or distances. Also add some accommodation possibilities.

Will try to get some more details regarding the trails as in maps profiles etc.

A brief description of the ride:

You leave town along a gentle climb through the bluegum forest along flowing singletrack. It flattens out and there have been some berms added along the faster sections You then join a district road and jeep track back towards town before you enter the bluegum forest again. over the river into town and then you have a choice of two routes: a tough technical climb or a slow easier switchback climb through the nature reserve to the contour jeep track.

From here you look over the town as you ride on a very fast jeep track with rain humps that can be loads of fun jumping. You then veer off onto more single track with a few ups and downs before you cross a fairly major bridge. You need to be careful here as it can be very slippery when wet (until the chicken mesh has been added). From here a steep little climb and some undulating track to the Preekstoel (pulpit).

Along the way some magnificent views and awesome singletrack cut into the mountain side. From the preekstoel you descend on probably the most tricky bit, a narrow singletrack descent to the plain. Then jeep track, more single track that includes a stile as well as a fun little bridge before you reach the tar road at the opposite end of town.

When a map is available I will post that, but in the meantime visit the local bike shop (well stocked!) for more info.

There are some really technical bits of riding in and around the town - including a rock garden route (I think it is about 3 kms of technical rocky riding) There is also a riverbed that will form part of an extended trail in the future that is loads of fun. And then the bmx track, the rollers and doubles help hone your manual and jump skills.

so anyone ridden these trails recently? I will be in Struisbaai for 2 weeks over the silly season and keen to ride them.

Go see Naas in Bredasdorp, he's got the local bike shop. He'll be able to point you in the right direction or even show you around.
