So after pricing tubeless kits today I decided that I would try the ghetto method tubeless conversion.

I used old 26" tubes with removable valve cores.

I slit them around the outside and installed them over the standard rim strips.

Nobby Nic tubeless ready tires went back on and they inflated again with just a floor pump.

After that I deflated and put sealant in through the valve, then re-inflated

A quick trim of the excess tube and all done.

Total cost: maybe R50 of sealant

i should have done this, how difficult was it? any sealant leaking out?

You should have gone with a 20" tube rather, but if you aren't experiencing loss of pressure in the long term (3 days to a week) then it doesn't matter although it would weigh less. ;)

Have you been able to find a 20" presta tubes?

That's exactly why I used the 26" tubes. That, and the fact that I had the tubes at home already.

I reckon most of us have a few old tubes floating around.

I did the conversion on Saturday night, and on Sunday they had were still sitting at the 3 bars of air pressure that I had put in them. I let out 1 bar to ride with them, and they still feel the same this evening. I would say that they are every bit as successfull as a Stan's conversion.
