Hi Hubbers

Entered for the Cape Pioneer Trek. My longest stage race before was Sabie Experience (4 days).

Are there any experienced Pioneer Trek riders (or other long stage races such as Epic, J2C) who want to share their training and race experiences? I am especially interested in the volume of training other riders do, as I am a bit worried that I am not doing enough (currently riding 12 - 14 hours p week).

Hi Thor

My take on this.

12 - 14 hrs training is a lot.

I've done the CPT last year, and 6 months prior I did a total 215 hrs of training, that is 6:43 hrs avg with a max of 14:23 (per week) I only did > 9hrs for 9 weeks over this period. But then, I normally do about 300 hrs of training per year anyway. And when I do train, it is quality over quantity.

True dat!

12 - 14hrs per week is PLENTY.

I hope most of those are actually on the bike - key point to note!

You can train a lot in gym which will help - but your ass needs to be a negative print of your saddle.

Get in a few long consecutive rides if you can - get use to 5 - 7hrs back-to-back

Oh, forgot to say, we tried to get a decent GC/category result. And we did kind of OK.

Thanks gentlemen, that helps to set my mind at ease. I don't intend racing, just want to finish. However, everyone tells me how tough it is and that made me think I may not be training enough.

Vinnydabutcher, yes most of it is on the bike and includes a long ride (5-6 hours) over the weekend.
