is that the drop off where to the right is the chicken run and tothe left is the drop off with the chicken net over it ? I did it the last event and it wasn't as bad as what it looked.Keep your weight back use your rear brakes and you should be fine.

I suggest trying a few drop off 1st but if you don't feel comfortable rather opt out, safety 1st ! my 2c

iBike, if you're on FB, go check the Cannondale page. By sheer coincidence I saw an awesome pic they posted last night together with their mtb results. The guy is all the way behind the saddle, balanced and fully committed. As said before, hesitation is the mother of all evil.

Also, - and I may get shot for this! - check out SuperCycling. Every now and then they've got a technique insert which takes you through various typical obstacles. And again there you'll hear: balance, weight distribution, commitment.

If you start "thinking" or "wondering" halfway through, then you may as well start picking your spot. Get your azz behind the seat and trust the bike. Practise on some small drops in your area just to get the feel - if you've done it once, it'll click and you can move on to bigger drop and see... oh, it's just the same!

This one - look at where his saddle is - insane skills.

The Fabian Barel video, as posted earlier, has all the drop off theory you require. Also check out his other videos for more skill theory and demonstration.

Here are screen shots, for drop off with a landing on a slope:

That's the one! No going half-azzed - just do it! Or take the chicken run in time... but once you've gone, just go!

Good advise. I actually found a good spot at redbarn on Sunday to practice this. It's the gradient but shorter.

I now wonder if we will pass that obstacle again? I read the organizers are changing the route to keep it interesting.

For know its practice, practice.

Those drops are fun... We played on them for at least an hour a few weekends ago. They could even be a bit higher.

Semi - hi-jack here.

Speaking of drop-offs, how the hell does one do the top drop-off on Vasbyt? I'm referring to the one which has a small root drop into a big root/stump drop 1.5m further on?

It seems that if you go too fast you'll just end up in all kinds of trouble not clearing the whole thing, but too slow and you are in for some good old fashioned over the bars onto your head fun times.

I don't have a picture of the section, but it is rather famous.

Not sure if I have seen it or ridden it but would like to. :D

I haven't seen it, but 1.5m sounds perfectly huckable.

On the Karkoof DH course there's a double drop in the forest section (probably about 2-2.5m between drops). It's awkward in that you either have to go slow to tackle them individually, or go fast and double them. I made the mistake of going regular pace and my rear wheel landed on the top of the second drop, my front wheel off the drop. If it wasn't for good suspension and a bit of absorbtion in my legs as I leaned back to the max, I could have gone OTB.

Next run though, I came in faster and hucked it like it was one bigger drop. Wasn't graceful, but it's the fastest way down, and felt pretty safe too.

huck it!

The "dropoff" in the usn race isnt really a dropoff as much as it is just a steep(ish) decline.

As mentioned just get your butt over the back wheel and go for it, feather the brakes to control your speed and you'll be fine.

@ Haley. The trail for the 30km usn race is on the other side of the main road, so it is not near the drop offs you're thinking of. Those ones are fun though, just a bit small. Would like to speak to the guy who builds the trails about making a bigger one there..

We did discuss this. :D

We would even assist in the building of additional more hectic drop lines down there. The hard part would be to make the signage at the top more scary for them. Lol
