I've finally given up trying to defend my Polar power meter (even on the Indoor Trainer I could never get it to behave properly!), and I managed to pick up an ex-team Powertap hub and wheel. This will go onto my training bike which rarely if ever leaves the house. I mainly use Garmin for my outdoor training - I have an Edge500 for the Road/MTB (soon to be updated to an 800 for Jhb2c), and a Forerunner 410 for my running, and I use the Garmin software so I don't really want to change brand. The plan is then to leave the Edge500 on the IDT with the speed and cadence sensor in place.

So the question is, does an Edge500 work well with a Powertap, or is there a better Garmin unit (310XT, 910XT) which will read more accurately?

Yup - it's all ant+ so it will pick up fine, I'm just tired of sukkeling with the Polar and its PMS-esq erratic readings, so I really don't want the same issues with the new setup....

Edge 500 will pair perfectly with an Ant+ Powertap hub.

The chain based power units of Polar can be very erratic and finicky.

No Sh*t. I managed to get it spot on and very stable at 39/13, 14, 15, but the moment you move into the 53/11 or 12, the chain is miles off the centreline of the sensor and It varies between the power of Jens and the power of the girl on the tricycle down the road.....

I have an edge 500 with a powertap using it indoors and it works like a charm

How easy was it to calibrate? Or did you just do the setup and leave it at that?

I just left it -didn't calibrate it , the power numbers is very consistent and just turn the gps off for using it indoors. It does makes the indoor training much more interesting and focussed.

Surely the Garmin is only displaying the data and will only be as accurate as the device sending it? i.e. the problem was with the device (Polar) sending the data not the Garmin ..... hence any Garmin that is Ant+ compatible should be fine?

What Notsobigben said........

Will be as accurate as what the PT is.....

I have been using the Edge 500 and the a MTB PT for almost a year now....all good.

There is a way to Zero it...just look at the Edge 500 manual.

I think you don't pedal and press the zero button (but there is a bug you have to have an HR paired and wear it so Edge can do the zero)
