I'm looking to save weight somewhere, I'm currently riding with Maxxis Crossmark's 835gr each (according to their website)

1. Can you recommend a lighter tubless tire? Brand, weight, price?

2. Just curios does anyone still ride with tubes these days & how do you find it or should I ask how often do you puncture?

Schwalbe, lightest tyre that does not have tissue paper sidewalls. Rocket Rons and Racing Ralph are both around 640g (snakeskin tubeless ready ones). That's a big weight saving. Don't bother with the full tubeless ones. Prices have gone up a lot, with the Ront's recent nosedive, but look around and you may still find them for under R600.

That said, if you're riding in really sharp rocky terrain stick with the Maxxis. They're bullet proof.

If you're on a 29er you can save 400grams by doing a Rocket Ron/Racing Ralph combo, Cost - R1200

Or 500grams with Maxxis Ikon combo - R900

1st one is better for me, great grip, but RR not as durable as Ikon for the rear, you can even mix (I don't like mixing brands, but that's just me) an Ikon rear, Ron front, Ron has been a revelation on the front for me, have much more confidence hammering turns and off cambers.

Anyway, that's my 2c worth

Cheers

Thanks, I'll ride all terrain. So you reckon the TL is not much difference vs the Full Tubless ones?

Ikon Rear & Ron Front = 500gr weight saving?

The rocket Ron & Racing Ralph combo are you referring to the Snakeskins here?

Yip, the Ikon EXC/EXO = 580grams and the Rocket Ron snakeskin = 630grams, that's 1210grams combined.

The difference between tubeless and tubeless ready is that the tubeless have a waterproof layer in them, no other difference. This adds weight (obviously) for no real benefit that I've experienced.

Certainly the sidewalls have less protection than the snakeskin version. Only thing is you may use a bit more sealant as the sealant now has to form that waterproof layer. If your bike has stood a few days you may see the tyres weeping small amounts of sealant, but that's it. Literally no air loss. Have used a Rocket Ron (or sometimes Nobby Nic) front, Racing Ralph rear combo for about 5 years now.

if you had enough grip up front with the crossmarks, go for maxxis ikons front and back. 580g a piece @ R450 each. They last longer than the swalbes.

Grip was never an issue, I believe that comes from your bike handling skills, so I might just go with both F&R Ikons.

If grip isn't an issue, you can even take it right down and save 1kg!! Go Specialized Renegade S-works 460grms each!! I've done that, crazy light, crazy fast, crazy scary! (But fun)
