Contemplating upgrading to a Dale in the next few weeks. I've searched in past threads, but didn't find anything concrete.

Just a few questions regarding maintenance on the Lefty.

  1. How easy is it to do the day-to-day cleanup.
  2. How easy is it to do the occasional self-service, if at all? Re-oil, check seals, bearing adjustment, etc.?
  3. How much is a typical minor service on a Lefty?
  4. How often do you have to service a Lefty, say compared to say a Fox?
  5. I see the 2013 Lefty models don't have that rubber sock thing on it anymore... does this influence the above in any way?

Any feedback much appreciated, thanks!

Just got mine back after its second major service since 2010. As far as I know there isn't much you can do yourself on the Lefty, they (bike shops) send them off to Omnico in Cape Town where they service them. On average the service costs about R650 to R800. I know the new Lefty is a better sealed unit thus no rubber sock but other then that its an awesome shock! Once you go Lefty you never go back....

Have 4 lefties, none have given any trouble, the 2013 lefty is pretty much a rock shock, so no real difference there.

except that its single arm

and much much nicer.

Maintenance wise the 2013 Hybrid is a breeze. Pre 2013 you need some tools and HAVE to do a bearing reset every 20 or so hours. Major PITA.
