On my Merida and the wife's Giant and Specialized, the rear brakes are on the right side. This made sense to me as I am used to mostly using the right hand for brakes like on the motorbike.

Bought myself a bike last week but the brakes are swapped around, so rear is on the left.

Googled it and apparently it differs between countries being a function of which side of the road the ride ....

my rear brakes are on the opposite side of my front brakes...

When I bought my new bike (also Merida) they actually asked which side I wanted the back and front brakes

Go to you nearest LBS (or the LBS you trust with your "baby" and ask them to change the brake lines for you

It cost a few bucks (or a case of beers) but they can get it fixed... :w00t: no problem...you can set / or get your bike set up as YOU want it!!!

My set-up:

Left hand side = Front brake and FD

Right hand side = Back brakes and RD

WTF were you sailing on a sand road?

 Yeah, I do sail down dust roads waiting for the next bit of singletrack.

The shimano M585 cant just be flipped around. To swop the rear to the left . what would I need ?

Do I need new hydralic tube or just a bleed ?

No it can't.

Just unscrew the current hoses and swap them over, if you are careful and don't let the hoses flick or lose too much oil you won't even need to bleed after.
