So after doing some research into steel it seems not all are equal and these two seem to sit at the top of the pile due to strength and air hardening at welds...so it seems to be much of a muchness

But then you get...Reynolds 953 aka stainless steel....anyone has a bike made out of stainless or know of a manufacturer....not that I would want one but would be interesting none the less. Ride characteristics...compliance...strength

Also this table is quite a good reference for the different tubes being used in bike manufacturing

Dangle...If anyone, you probably have ridden one

Eldron...come on this is your game mr MetalScientistInWhiteCoat

I've been looking at a few 853 bikes and pretty settled on getting a Pipedream Sirius.

From what i read it seems that both are air hardened and that the ride should be similar. It seems that the TT OX tubing is readily available in more tube sizing’s.TT OX is also a little more rust resistant.

Yea but then I think Reynolds 853 is marginally tougher ito strength. Not much between the two I think. The frame I am looking at is also made from TT OX Platinum.

The pipedream sirius is a good looking frame.

The way it should be...

Works of art really, with a price to match..

Yea I noticed that....

Still I wonder why its quite hard to find someone that makes a 953 mtb...easy enough to find a roadbike

I don't know the material composition details, but I am in the tool making industry and I do know Stainless isn't the hardest or toughest material around.

Could be it isn't able to take the impact that a MTB frame needs to take.

Road riding may have more torque and power going thru the frame, but a road frame stays on the tar and doesn't get airborne.

Maybe someone with better knowledge of the chemical composition can comment more accurately

yes, probably something like that....its seems the elasticity of 853 and OX Platinum gives it its feel, which stainless might not have. Forgot Eldron is at world champs otherwise he would have been able to shed some light

I would stay away from the 953 for Mtb, the strength ratings are great but the material is not as tough as it should be, i did my home work and samples and the whole bit and settled on the Columbus range.

Reynolds 931 Cotic:

Not a fan of the T-bone type seat stays though.

Your 931 and Columbus XCr is pretty much the same material, similar properties, at the point now cost can make the decision, the reason I chose columbus is they do forks and a bunch of other stuff that makes creating a frame a lot easier.

Personally I would stick with Reynolds or Columbus. They been around for years and that supplied steel that have made some of the best performance bikes in the world.

But that's just me.
