Used the Edge 500 for a long time before i upgraded to the Edge 800.

No problems at all. Usually a firmware update will fix any issues you are having should it not find satellites.

Live tracking & uploading to Garmin Connect via phone is not the only upgrade you get when going from the 500 to the 510.

 

Some of the other nice features you only realize when you start using the 510.

 

For a gadget freek like myself, 510, hands down.

 

On the 510:

Add up to 10 bike profiles (3 on the 500)

Touch Screen

Colour Screen

Setup different profiles for Racing & Training

Personal Records

Shortcuts to switch profiles is much easier than 500

Changing Display info is as easy, press + hold and choose your new info option.

Virtual partner is back (used to be on the 305 but not the 500)

Choose to Save or Discard rides after pressing stop. (I Like this cause sometimes I test a lot stuff I dont wanna save!)

 

There are a lot if small differences that makes the 510 great!

 

Those that say the 510 is not worth the extra R1000 has obviously not had the 510 in their hands ... or they had but did not switch it on!

Anyone have problems with the 500 picking up satellite signal?

 

This issue is not picking up the satelite signal.

 

With the last 500 software update the clever techies at Garmin wanted to include some software that identify the unit and make it easier for the to log the service history of the unit.

 

This somehow prolongs the unit to "search" or "log" onto the satelites. With the latest software this process just takes longer when you start the unit.

 

It makes no difference to the signal quality once logged on. I have never had any signal problems and I Always ride on GPS signal only.

 

I rolled back to the previous version of software on the 500 because I want it locked and loaded as soon as I turn her on!

I have the 510, friends have the 500. Biggest diff is colour touch screen v black/white button operation. Satellite on 510 better, and few minor functions on 510 better. Both are excellent, without any complaints form all users. Worth the extra 1000 bokke, I think so.

I have the 510 as well , I would take it over the 500 any day . After each ride it uploads to my phone and Garmin connect .

By the Time you add the Vat and that little bit extra that SARS charges it works out cheaper over this side.
