I am new to MTB. Got a pair of used Look Quartz pedals.

Getting the pedal to stick is not the problem. But getting out is a mission. (At least when I compare it to my road bike.) So I am worried about what will happen if I need to get of the bike rapidly.

Is this normal, or is there something I can do to make it less tight?

And just before this starts an argument, I want to go with clip ins. I tried the flats but didn't like it at all.

did you use the right spacers (the ones that go between the cleat and your shoe)

What Fanievb said... The more spacers you have in, the easier it is to clip out.

Normally you get 2 x 0.5mm 2 x 1mm and 2 x 2mm spacers included with the cleats. (fixed).

Start off with 1 x 0.5mm and 1 x 1mm and check how easily you can clip out.

If you do not have the spacers, I am not sure if you can buy them separately.

It might mean you will need to buy a new set of cleats with spacers if you can't get your hands on them.

o ja, be careful with second hand pedals. They may be worn already and you will not get a proper fit (no matter what you do - i learned the hard way).

Looks wear on the platform and at the front of the spring thingamajik

Thanx everyone. Will try to get extra spacers. But Fanie's picture has got me worried. There might be a reason I got it for free....
