If you're getting a new shock as part of the new frame, then surely the old shock should go back with the old frame??

 

Yes, it should, insurance is aimed at putting you back in the same position you were before the incident, not improving your previous position.

I would think so too... It would be a bit like claiming for a new cellphone and keeping the battery of the old one...

 

Your friend could try speaking to the assessor to find out if he can buy the salvage back.

 

Handing the old shock back is no loss to your friend - he's getting a brand new shock to replace his second hand one...
