first time back in Johannesburg in about 20 years.

I live in Los Angeles where I ride quite a lot in the surrounding DH parks and trails....

Getting a bit bored while I am here, is there anywhere to rent / ride DH bikes around here?

or JHB not really geared to that sort of thing?

Hey there!

Pity you didn't post this earlier, as there was a DH get together this past weekend, and the Gauteng DH guys have a "village bicycle" which is free to use for anyone that doesn't have a bike.

As for rental though, nothing really.

As for places to ride... there are quite a few within 1hr from JHB

  • Helderkruin (West Rand, near Strubens Valley/Clearwater mall)
  • Thaba Trails (Alberton side. Just off Kliprivier)
  • 139 (Waterkloof PTA)
  • Hartebeesport (events only, but there's one coming up on the 5th October which will use the cableway for up lifts)
  • Gilooley's (East Rand, hasn't been used in while though so don't know if it's worth looking into)
  • Fort Klapperkop (near Fountains, PTA... also hasn't been used in while)
  • Stonehouse (near Hartebeesport, another that hasn't been used in a while)

Your 3 best bets (in descnding order) are Thaba Helderkruin, 139. Check out the DHer's FB page to keep up to date on group rides, or cheap bikes for sale etc.

Hope that helps

you can rent bikes at the pwc bike park in fourways. (not DH bikes tho...) there are some dirt jumps there too which are pretty fun to play on.

AFAIK it's planned for 5 October.

Yup! Saw the organizers at Helderkruin on Saturday. 5th October. Numbers limited to 50 entrants.

More than that, I do not know.
