There is an exciting new MTB & Trail Running Track near Lanseria Airport in Joburg North called Hobbiton (next to Monaghan Farm), open last weekend of every month. All proceeds go to the Dalmatian Rescue Center that is on the property - so a really cute cause. You will never see so many spots again, like this place.

Two tracks that can be ridden together and mixed and matched to make up distance:

Track 1: Middle Earth - an easy blue route with long uphills and downhills, ideal for fitness training. A little bit of everything - rocks, single track, dam cut outs, tight corners, bunny hops to hop for!

Track 2: Hobbits Cove - an exciting thrill and really picturesque ride in the trees and along a river! Mainly blue and black technical route with chicken runs. It challenges your mind, body and bike skills. It has a touch of everything: wide single tracks, rocks, soft sand, drop offs, testing uphills, quick downhills. Ideal for skills training. Trainers & coaches can prebook private training weekends with their clients.

Great venue to ride to or ride from. Safe parking for cars and safe for single riders/runners and ladies. Only open last weekend of every month. Coke, water and Energades can be bought there if you forget your drinks.

Address: Plot 6 Hills & Dales, Lanseria (S25 54'50 / E027 56'41.8). Call 083 626 9544 for more info or directions. Open 7am - 2pm.

Next open day: 28/29 September from 7am - 2pm

how much is it to ride and distance for middle earth and hobbits

- Hi there - price to ride is R40 per bike or if you come in a group of 10 or more bikes there is a bulk entry discount. Distances: Ride both tracks as per the numbering and you will do a challenging 6km (approximately) then ride the tracks a second time out of order for extra distance. It's the perfect track to use as a destination point if you ride from a meeting point to Hobbiton, hone your bike skills and then ride back to meeting point. Perfect tracks for time trials as well.

Hi Anne

We rode your trails yesterday and think its a great initiative.

It is fantastic that the proceeds go to the animal rescue centre!!

The sand sections are good for those who've never ridden in sand before- a skill that comes in quite handy in races...

It will be good when you add some more trails along the river.

I think it is a good trail for families to ride, where the less skilled riders can ride on the one side and then try the harder side.

Maybe a rock garden or 2 on the 'technical' side will be a good option...

With a couple of drop offs thrown in :)
