How to differentiate between wheels being QR, 9, 15mm etc

Hi guys,

Find myself not understanding terminology on our rims and hubs.

How do i know what my wheels currently are?

Are they QR, 9mm, 15mm, through axle, quick release?

Could people please help my stupid self know the difference and the pros and cons?

I would love to know full jargon.

Thanks

Hi Bman

Quick release or QR or 9mm is all the same thing, it's a axle diameter of 9mm with a hole in it for a a quick releasing locking devise,

15mm or maxle is another story, works more like a motorbikes axle, where the axle shaft pushes through the hub and locks into the fork or frame,

It also comes in 20mm diameter

Yes - the Mavic QR Adapters are pretty universal and fits into most 15mm Endcaps to allow QR use.

Thanks naas .Have a set of alex rims that i want to change for a set of arch /x9 on my single speed

A rim has nothing to do with the hub's axle configuration.

and your reply has nothing of value to add, it is a reasonable question asked by someone that is not in the know, not all people know as much as you, the same time as you took to reply, and the same time it took me to reply to you, would have been better spent going to the fridge to grab a beer.

hate replies that have nothing to add but try to appear clever

so basically if I'm looking at building up a new wheel set, I can make it what ever axle diameter I like or is available at the time?

Both wheels on mine are QR with the skewer handle that you would open and screw out of the cap on the other side.

Depends largely on your fork and frame, yes you could get a thru axle hub and convert it to QR, but not the other way around, and a fork that takes a thru axle won't take a QR and vise versa .

If you have a QR set up stick with it, unless you plan to upgrade your fork too,
