We have a newspaper of sorts in the Deep South called The Peoples Post. This mornings edition had a letter from a lady re cyclists and the rules of the road.

I know this has been argued and debated a million times and I know that it all comes down to attitude of both cyclists and vehicle drivers.

But seriously... i dont believe the rules she has stated are close to correct... Id like to write to the 'Post', to her and just maybe outline the correct rules, and also explain that 'attitude' is the cause of all the problems... still though I think she could benefit from at least knowing the correct rules...

There was a 'topic of discussion' on here a while back where somebody had researched the 'rules' and posted them and alot of discussion happened re them. Can anyone send me the link to that 'topic' or a link to the actual rules please?

Ive taken a pic of said article and put it up for you to understand...

Yeah, I stand with you. I think a letter to the post briefly outlining the law on the matter (ie that we have a right to the road, and cars should wait in order to pass cyclists safely), and the benefits of cycling to society, would be really helpful. However we may feel about the issue, politeness is key in both getting the letter published, and in the receptiveness of those reading (ie the drivers who we need to change).

If you want someone to read over your letter feel free to pm me :)

(Require the services of a Language Nazi here please)

and that is why you should have payed more attention in class my dear Estelle

In the 1930s' when you were at school the CARTS had right of way and not the cars as you state.

Why? Carts are drawn by horses and these animals are temperamental and unpredictable, therefore carts had the right of way.

Times changed and now every vehicle has the right to be on the road and no one have the right of way anymore, except at four-way stops and traffic Circles and if your surname is Zuma. It seems that the law makers did not take into consideration that there might be people like you that are temperamental and unpredictable, just like a horse.

http://www.capetown....traffictoo.aspx

Not the Road Traffic Act, but an article by the City of Cape Town...

Throw that into the Post and onto Estelle's front porch.

EDIT: quote from the Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996

" (xv) "driver" means any person who drives or attempts to drive any

vehicle or who rides or attempts to ride any pedal cycle or who

leads any draught, pack or saddle animal or herd or flock of

animals, and "drive" or any like word has a corresponding meaning;

(ii)"

ie - Same rules to be applied by cyclists (drivers of pedal cycle) as by drivers (of motor vehicle). Keep left - pass right, stop at red light, stop street. etcetera etcetera.
