I am looking at upgrading the wheels on my built up bike. It currently has the old red style Vuelta Airline wheel that was on the Trek bikes in around 2005 with dura ace hubs. I am looking at getting the Shimano R500 Wheelset.

My question being is it worth it as a cheap upgrade or should I hold on until I have saved more and get a better wheelset?

Yeah agree, save up and rather buy something like Easton EA 70 or EA 90's.

Use them as race wheels, this way your existing wheels can take the damage and wear caused by training.

The Shimano's would be a backwards move IMO.

Those red wheels you are referring to are much older than 2005. If those wheels have seen better days, then the Shimano R500 will be a good replacement and will do the same job. They won't be an upgrade though.
