Hi guys...

Is there anywhere we can check to see the amount of climbing in this race, still new to the cycling thing and don't want to go in over my head?

Maybe a route profile?

2012 = old 112 km route was 1093 m accent

I unfortunately do not have the old 97km route info but could not be more that 150 - 200 m at most difference.

Maybe a route profile?

The new 80km route has about 985m of climbing. The route is the same as this one, minus the first 5.75km and the last 5.75km.

I might have bitten of more than i can chew at this stage then.on the old profile it did not look that bad, except for that one hekpoort climb.

how does hekpoort compare to the d2d last climb up to the finishline that you get?

Indeed, you are right. My apologies for not checking first before I posted. Its a nice touch.

I have emailed them to request a change of entry

Have you heard anything back from them about changing your entry?

I emailed them over the weekend. Waiting for an answer. Will phone on Wed if they have not replied by then.

hekpoort is steeper that d2d in my opinion however this 2/3 into the race thus not to bad as d2d is at the end . . .

in conclusion . . . you will experience pain regardless ! :whistling:

Sjoe, steeper, longer and much harder. The bummer with Hekpoort is there is that little mock climb at the beginning - just as you think it was actually not that bad...you hit the real thing. Think Suikerbossie - in my opinion...

well i have concluded that i am doomed in any case.fairly new to cycling and have only been doing 50km races.so thought the 80km would be a nice in between before i tackle a 100km.looks like i have choosen a nasty one.

You are not doomed ! The race will be a good learning curve . Even though there is hekpoort to contend with , this is quite a fast race.

If I may suggest . . . Stay with your group till hekpoort , then get your own pace going as the last stretch from the satellite station is quite fast and majority down hill !

good luck and very important to have fun !

Very true. And, if possible try to position yourself in the front 1/3 of the bunch when you hit Hekpoort. This allows you to gradually move to the back of the bunch - should you battle with the climb - and chances are that you will not get dropped and you can stick with the bunch for the rest of the race.

Sure Hekpoort is hard but really not impossible - as a good friend of mine always says, just granny-gear it out! :P

Agree . . . granny-gear hekpoort . . . I will fit my 12-25 cassette for the race just to stay in contact with the group up hekpoort
