Hi guys,

Don't know if this is the place - couldn't find a FAQ section or something similar.

Basically looking to get into MTB with the girlfriend. Total newbie. I need to kit us both for under 10k. Steep ask, I know... Thus, looking at second-hand bikes.

I am 1.88m and weight about 100kg. I have seen a guide that indicates that I need to look at a frame size of 21/23". How important is the proper frame size? Also, what size tires does one need to get? 26" or 29" ?

Where do I find a proper bike that I can trust to not be a rip-off?

What specs do I need to look at for shocks, group set etc ?

What do I need to watch out for? Can anyone give me some sort of advice? I've asked around for second-hand shops but can't seem to find one. Some links to good solid buys in the price range would be really appreciated (even off-site links will do :-) )

Basically I'm as confused as can be by all the jargon out there. Pretty intimidating.

Your questions will take about 10 pages to answer. Look at the classifieds section here on the hub for good 2 hands. For you a large 29 and maybe a 26 for her. Get some good helmets and your 10 000 is klaar. Worry about cleats etc. Later. Hub has seller ratings and comments to check for genuine sellers but if u check recent posts you will see its a jungle out there. My advice is find someone you know locally to help get started.

Frame size is the most important factor when buying a bike. Second hand is a good option, but you have to know what you are looking for or you may be burnt.

As a newby I would go for 2 second hand 26" bikes. If you can do a good deal maybe even a 29er for you and a 26" for your goose.

There are super deals on 26" bikes right here on the hub.

We dont tolerate skelms here so you should be able to buy with relative ease of mind.

Size is very important, you want to ride and enjoy it. Riding the wrong size bike aint so lekker.

Dont be intimidated by the jargon, believe me, if you enjoy the sport, you will talking the jargon like an old pro within 6 months.

Dont be shy to ask for advice, most dudes will give advice with pleasure.

Buy the bikes, get out there and ride.

Most important, Enjoy, enjoy and enjoy!
