So OD2 has no physical frame differences? That is great news then.

I am just worried that a reign is going to be a bit of a dog on the way up and I want something that climbs decently.I must say the reign looks amazing but probably a bit hardcore for what CT has to offer? Also its Pike fork doesnt have travel adjust.

Self control is an issue. Start out as a R20k project now a R40k one haha.

I can't say whether od2 headtube is the same as a normal tapered headtube (I think this is the case) with a bearing with larger id to accommodate the larger tapered steerer. Either way, to put a normal tapered for in you just change the upper headset bearing assembly.

158mm on a Trance? Has anyone actually fitted a 200x57 shock to confirm it works?

I wonder how much it will cost to replace that rear shock and put on a 160mm fork? It might be less then changing the whole bike to a Reign.

There is the link for the boys who have done it successfully. I am gonna play with mine this evening and see. The clearance is a little tight in the seat tube but if you are gonna bottom out so badly that your FRAME flexes then the suspension is set up badly in any case... IMHO.

One of the guys on the Pinkbike thread says that the standard rear shock is a 200x57 but is limited internally.

Anyone know anything about that? It would be much cheaper to unlimit it than to buy a new one.

Hey Pierre, the 2012 Reign had a 200x51 shock which some people swapped out for a 200x57 and got the same travel as the Reign X (6.7 inches).

I have also heard of people changing the upper rocker on the 29er Trances to get 140mm of rear travel.

It seems that the Giant's are quite accomodating of "fiddlers".

I just don't want to sink too much dough into this bike, especially if I am always going to look longingly at the Reign.

Yeah I spoke to Andrew from Stoke Suspension. Unlikely that it will be able to be "un-limited". As I said, I'll open mine this evening and see - he has pointed me in the right direction (so I know what to look for once it is open) so I will know this evening whether it can be adjusted. I will let you know. The problem is that the spacer is usually built into the damper seal head in these oem mods like this for giant. But there is a chance that the spacer was just added, in which case it can be removed and the full 57mm comes on tap (with a damper rebuild)

Right guys, sorry for the slew of posts from me but I need advice. About to pull the trigger:

Kind of decided on the following:

Giant Trance 2 + Giant Dropper + SLX brake upgrade + PIKE RCT3 160mm + Boobar + Thompson stem + headset (not sure which one).

I'll ride the rims until they need replacing.

Price will probably be around R34 - R35k once I have sold stock fork. The Pike is the biggest expense, just about 1/3 of price.

I want a bike for Cape Town trails that I can pedal with ease up hill and then have fun and jump most things on the way down.

Other logical options:

Trance sx @ 42k. It has better wheels and hubs but inferior fork, I want 2x10. Same geometry

New Reign: Looks good but worried its going its too much for CT trails and slow. Stock fork, crank and breaks are lesser than my proposed build.

What else? I had a look at Pyga which I have a soft spot for but Its going to cost about R50k to get something that I am happy with.

I like where you are going with option 1, but I was on eBay today, and saw some great deals on 650b 160mm forks, specifically the Marzo 350 CR and there were some X-fusion ones too.

This could cut your spend substantially.

Thanks Guys.

I've had a Marzo before and it was ok, strong but not very plush. I know the Pike is best that's why I want it, else I will just stick to stock fork.

Sticking to stock fork is also an option and will save quite a bit of money. Most people have told me it is not that great and the extra travel and thicker stanchions will transform the bike on the descents.

Listen to them. The Pike is MILES better than the fox on there.

Its funny, but the more I look at it, the more I am inclined to keep my Trance instead of upgrading to the upcoming Reign. I have never had any question on the strength of the frame, with my only real gripe being that I would like a longer fork and shorter stem, making it slacker and better for the downs. Does anyone know what the Geo effect would be with a 160mm fork and an angleset?

I know that the 140mm rear end is actually ample for my needs but it is nice to know that I could squeeze it out to 158mm if I want.

I reckon that the Reign would need to come in at a really competitive price for me to look at it seriously.

On a side note:

It is much easier to sneak little upgrades (fork, brakes, stems, handlebars, dropper posts etc) past my wife than completely new bikes.

Only problem with the marzo is the local spares option. I'm not too sure how available the spares kits are, and even though Cycle Lab have the agency for them it doesn't sound as if they're going to do much with it.

But look how sexy it is...I can see my bike wearing that easily.

If you want the Geo with the 160mm fork, just look at the Trance SX.

Angelset will change the headangle and have a minimal effect on the rest of the measurements.
