Rogue riders: how to find a workable solution?

Bike boards for Members & Non-Members need to be enforced. No board - No ride. If you get caught, they confiscate your bike or lock you up for trespassing. The message will get across to theses morons sooner or later.

I'm sure they have confiscated bikes from guys that ride the Tongaat-Hulett land in KZN.

Rogue rider busting rides. Get together a few club riders on different times and go out and confiscate the bicycles of rogue riders. Impose a fine for them to get their bicycles back. If they threaten to take action against you, you threaten them with prosecuting them for trespassing.

Cassie, I am also part of the same club to be able to use the trails, and I think it is very difficult. I have made some effort to ask guys that I meet on the routes whether they are members, and 90% of the time the answer is Yes.

How would you enforce this, and yes, how does the landowner know who are rogue riders. What is a rogue rider per definition?

Not an easy problem to resolve.

A Rogue Rider in my definition is:

(1) No club board on display - we as club has access to private land as per agreement with serveral landowners (now 2 less!!) No board means trespassing on private property! The baords enable farmers to identify any possible riders and revert back to club to sort out his issue.

(2) Rogue riders do not adhere to club rules: meaning when we ask them to stick to specific routes (i.e. do not ride on farmer's doorstep; tease his dogs etc. etc.) they simply ignore these requests as they are not "members"

When access is only to members with identifyable boards...you do not have to stop each and every guys you pass - only the ones without identification.

I am definitely not big or aggro enough to take a bike from someone else... Can see some pepper sprays being flung around...

Personally, sorry to say, I don't see the solution. If I was a landowner, I would be very hesitant to allow it on my property.

You leave that to the landowner, report them and then if they are found to be trespassing they should be arrested or bike confiscated or both.

Obviously need a few bigger dudes in the busting rider gang. Resistance will be dealt with by "moering".

Come to think of it, perhaps you are on to something here Mr X

This is a legal case waiting to happen... Violence on bikes don't work.

I met 2 Wannabee okes at a "water point" for a club ride on the Bilton vineyards 2 weeks ago on a Saturday morning. Maybe do that more often... They reminded me that Stellenzicht is closed and obviously also checked for my board.

They were quite big.

Coming from left-field here... but having boards is a workable solution, though then you have to put race boards over that, etc... Welvanpas annual permit is a sticker you apply, rather than a board.

Admittedly this may not be as visible, but it's just an idea, since it seems the boards are a bit of an issue.

No violence needed or advocated.

The bike is used to commit an offence, the club confiscate it, hand it over to the landowner, phone the police to come and fetch the culprit, lay a charge of trespassing.

Word will get around and problem will stop.

Question is, will clubs / landowners be willing to do this? If I was a landowner, I would rather just close my property to spare myself a bad headache.

Ja, I run out of cable ties taking it off and putting it back on after a race... Something even that attaches behind the seatpost or onder the top tube...

I think this should be dealt with by the clubs and riders. The more of a hassle this becomes for the landowners, the less likely they are to want to play ball with the cyclists.

Those who use the trails regularly should be prepared to either pay for some sort of enforcement or be prepared to provide time to do the enforcement themselves.

I would hazard a guess that many of these rogues are not aware that they are not welcome on some of these farms and a simple "information session" may suffice? I can tell you that if I lived in that neck of the woods, a club would be a must to gain access to those trails.

Have to try and leave the landowner out of this as much as possible, for as you said they will be very tempted to just ban cycling on their land. Use the landowner/law as a plan B for when plan A fails.

Then they must go straight for the jugular, no board = no ride = bike confiscated/ jail.

Word will spread like wildfire. If you see someone, just take note of their bike, clothes and report to the relevant person/authority at the trail centre.

I don't understand why a bike board for non members can't work?
