Rogue riders: how to find a workable solution?

This is Cape Town and I have a right to ride anywhere I want to and when I choose to do so!!

You could have legal issues if you confiscate someones bike - like theft.

As a landowner what is the easiest solution to the problem - close the gate - problem gone.

Main problem is that we have too many arrogant prigs on bicycles.

Many cyclists are not club members.

I have mentioned in the other theads about utilising booms, but at the end of the day these will probably be vandalised. Its just a pity that there isnt a "gate house" where there is someone all the time, you pay this person, he lets you through

The bigger problem for us is that certain farms has access via booms - no problem to control, and ussually problem here, but with most farms the access comes via other neighbouring farms...with no access control (although they are not open to general public).

I think it's more the guys that litter and don't respect other riders and the landowners.

Littering is least of the problem! trespassing is biggest problem...

That should be no excuse, we spend how much on lycra, 32Gi, kit, parts etc., part with a little bit to join a club if you wish to ride on private property!

Coming from left-field here... but having boards is a workable solution, though then you have to put race boards over that, etc... Welvanpas annual permit is a sticker you apply, rather than a board.

Admittedly this may not be as visible, but it's just an idea, since it seems the boards are a bit of an issue.

What about just making a velcro backed board of your own, and then attaching all the other boards to that? When you're riding TBMTB then attach that board, racing, attach the other one. It does mean carrying a bit of velcro along with you at all races, but still. it's a workable solution.

Or - you could just use some elastic bands to attach the race boards to your normal TBMTBC board...

Wat het by Simonsig gebeur by the way?

On the Wannabee's trails I'd say one out of three or four riders are displaying the relevant access boards over weekends....grinds my nuts when I see it.

I'll keep the second one under wraps until "official" - we will be negotiating again...i.e. begging not to shut us out!

Simonssig?? Jy bedoel seker Stellenzight?

This second farm closure is close to the first one...all I'll say for now...

This is not a "one or two riders" problem. This is a culture problem. Rogue riding started back in the day before full suspensions, even then people were riding all over the show until they got caught, and only then stopped riding on certain farms. The sense of entitlement is massive.

If I was a farmer, I would only let my friends ride on my land.

I assume this the farms between Stellies and somerset west. I was contemplating joining the specific club to ride these trails, but maybe I'll skip now.

If it's a cost thing, you have to accept the losses and make an example if you get the opportunity to. Giba has this problem. There is access from all sides. For the most part, people obey the rules and pay the fee. There are always those "that are just passing through". They won't go away though.

From a land access point of view it's difficult. Tongaat Hulett had loads of rideable land and the MTBers had access to parts of the estate that the estate manager couldn't get to. He got loads of feedback regarding all sorts of things. Then a few f'ed it up for everyone. They shut the doors and chased everyone away. There were months of negotiations that went on between KZNMTB, Ethekwini and THS. Ethekwini MTB was born and now you need a permit to ride marked trails only. If you do not have a board you will be prosecuted and they do check.

You can't stop someone from jumping a fence and trespassing, but you can prosecute them if they are caught.

Try get hold of Mike Bradley. I think he was involved in the negotiations. If not then he can point you in the right direction.

This is the best advice so far!! seems that this is the only workable solution...

once word get out of so ans o that got busted and prosecuted for trespassing...it will abate and fast, i think...

dis hoekom Epic volgende jaar weer via grabouw gaan.

Please make the member boards bit smaller for next year?

done already!! they will be much, much smaller + have valcro attachement. I still need to find out how to make 600 number boards with holes that can accomodate valcro strips...

At Steilte (Yes we are a tiny club) it's the members responsibility to ensure that non members sign the waiver and pay the day rate. If non members are caught riding in the presence of a member without having paid the access fee the member is banned for life.

Of course it's a small microcosm but people taking ownership of the trails is the answer. When I ride with non members I make DAMN sure they pay cos I know that money's going right back into the trails.

This is Cape Town and I have a right to ride anywhere I want to and when I choose to do so!! - Huh, You for real?

You could have legal issues if you confiscate someones bike - like theft. - Not really, its been done before by other landowners in KZN

As a landowner what is the easiest solution to the problem - close the gate - problem gone.

Main problem is that we have too many arrogant prigs on bicycles. - Agree 100%

Many cyclists are not club members. - Then they should still contribute, no fee=no ride, simple. if you don't pay, then face the consequences - End of story

I am definitely not big or aggro enough to take a bike from someone else... Can see some pepper sprays being flung around...

Dis nie net vir kom vat nie!

what about just a number thta can be phoned - so report a rogue rider...something like the neighbour wood watch...then aonce reported, soemone can take appropriate action! all we need is a reporting structure...

Some people are just to stooooopid to think outside the box, one wonders how they got there job in order to pay for their bikes & kit.

Lock em up I say

I don't want to be the harbinger of bad news, but steilte will have their share of self entitled rogue riders soon. Has been a supposed "grey area" for too long. And there are alternate access points as well.
