Before you go off the the bike shop to have something fixed....

Make sure you check everything!

I took a OTB fall this morning while on a ride ( I knew it was too early for me!). After picking myself up and checking out my cuts and scrapes, I got back on the bike and began to ride again.

I notice that my right shifter was not functioning properly, I could go up the gears but not down. I fiddled for a few minutes more then gave up and opted to head home. I could not see any damage other than a scratch so I assumed the inners had somehow become jammed.

At home I put the bike on the stand and had another look at the right shifter, after more fiddling, pulling, tapping and swearing I resigned myself to having to take the unit and in and see what could be done (and with it being an Xt unit I was expecting a shafting!).

I loosened the bolt for the brakes and shifter unit to start removing them and then noticed that my brake lever unit had moved ever so slightly closer to the shifting unit (I have them close together normally so it didnt look unusual), so I moved the brake unit aside and tested the shifter again.

And it worked! Somehow the brake unit must have been pressing into the shifter and preventing the shifter from taking up the slack everytime you changed gears!

It's always rewarding to "find" these solutions...even unkowingly!!

Chalk it up as experience!!
