Brad Brown of Cycle Talk SA chats to Andrew Mclean, Edna Mamonyane from the JMPD and Steve Hayward, the chairman of the Pedal Power Association about this incident and cycling safety in general.

ja well ... the show doesn't really tackle the crux of the matter imo. The root of the pandemic is the culture of bad driving. Too many bad drivers on our roads, yes the 1m rule is step fwd, but not really going to help when there is a fundamental lack of driving skills, sense of responsibility. and no respect for other road users. Give way? no way!

 

One solution is a serious up of the game for the awarding of drivers licenses. Look at what you have to go through to get a firearm license. A moving car is a weapon and can kill (esp, cyclists) so what's the diffs? And look at a Pilots License: lots of theory, very thorough training, taught to deal with all sorts of situations, and you have to keep current. Getting a Drivers License is trivial in comparison, and that context the carnage on the roads can be understood.
