Definitely worth a shot, thanks. I'll follow it up.

My concern with recoating stanchions is that because they're pressed into the crown it's impossible to turn them back down to the right tolerances without pressing them out of the crown again. IMO this would need to be done since the wear on the stanchions causes the tolerances to be out over the area where the wear occurred, which would cause problems running through the bushing.

If Fox are nervous about pressing them out and back in again in such a safety critical area, there's no way I'm taking that on...

Some of those coatings are super thin.... doubt you would have issues with the bushings and/or seals - they should accommodate those coatings easily enough.

I suppose the question is whether you can coat the fork without taking it out of the crown at all.... that would be ideal.

If you find yourself in CT, come past my shop and I'll show you what I mean. Stanchions get pretty seriously worn, to the point of leaving grooves in the aluminium. No coating in the world is going to get that smooth again...

Weld, Hard Chrome and regrind? but you would have to take it out of the crown first.... once it's out of the crown it would be easily do able - there are some good specialist platers around in the automotive world.... and some that are rubbish..

Will be in CT for Epic next - hopefully not be needing your services though... :)

Quick question, My rockshox XC30 fork crown needs a touchup. If I unscrew the compression and lockout thingies on the top will it all go to crap and fall apart in pieces or is this possible.

Taping these little things up will leave a ugly finish I think.

Please advise.

The adjusters or the topcaps?

Adjusters won't be a problem, just hold the knobs in place when undoing screws so you don't push against the limits of the adjusting mechanisms.

Topcaps are a bit different - you don't want muck falling into the oil. Unscrewing them is no issue though, just make sure you let all the air out if it's an air fork. A topcap to the forehead can leave quite a mark.

LOL, sounds painful.

So I just hold onto them and loosen the little allen head bolt. I'll then tape up the stanchions and spray the crown then put the caps back??

I'll try and take pics tonight and post in the morning and if you could please just confirm. Thanks for the reply.
