Looking @ buying a mtb bike & have seen the axis a70 for R3500, has hydraulic disc brakes, 24 speed, front suspension. Wanted to know is this a good buy? As I'm starting out... How good are the components etc.. Thanks

Go visit westdene cycles if you are in JHB ...

If you want some kind of "good" components on bike ... your price will go up. Best you can do is look for known brand components such as shimano or similar.

Also remember , if you start to take cycling seriously ... you will be disappointed quickly with a cheap buy ...

My daughter has the axis ... its good for a start into cycling ...

I bought the A20 full suspension a few months back, and I am more than happy with it, but as mudda says, if you really get into it, you will start being disappointed with the A70 and will soon want to upgrade.

. On a whole how is the brand that is axis? What's the cost of the A20? As a start would I get away with the a70 as my budget is tight :)

I find it absolutely fine, but really the only part on the A20 that is axis is the frame, the components are all shimano/sram/kore. I see the A70 has some components that I am not familiar with, and acis own brand brakes, so that I can't really comment on. It has Altus derailleurs and shifters which I had on a Raleigh Elderado which lasted me for years.

The A20 set me back around R13k, but it is a 2013 model and last of the stock. I also started looking with a budget of R5k a few months back, then realized that after riding for a few weeks would want/need to upgrade, so I waited and saved for a few months more and went for the A20, and I am so glad I did.

It is very difficult to say if it will be ok for you, what will your main focus be? Jeep track with the family, tearing down single track??

I'm from CPT, but had a quick look at those trails, should be fine. You aren't (and don't take this the wrong way) too big of a person? I ask because I am 1.91m and 97kg and I think that the A70 might 'struggle' with my size over time, will put excess strain on it over time.
