Western Cape has worst cyclists by far

Guess it depends on where you're cycling. I do most of my cycling in the Southern Suburbs and I get greeted the whole time. Sometimes just a short nod or an acknowledgement, but I don't need a hug from a cyclist coming from the other direction.

Everyone I cycle with also makes a point of thanking cars who wait on a narrow road or give adequate space, so I can only speak for a few cyclists in that area.

What I do agree with is the 2 or 3 abreast habit that many cyclists practice in Cape Town. I hate to generalise, but these guys mostly look like weekend warriors to me: cheap bikes with pro team kit on and a nice fat lunch box under the saddle. They really seem oblivious to the fact that they're doing anything wrong, so they must think they're allowed to do it?

This whole thing is just a storm in a D cup, I mean C cup......what are we talking about again? Oh yes, greeting fellow cyclists with Tea cups? It's too early in the new year to fight about tea! ;) :D

Hahaha I see this whole thing has gone haywire! The hubbers have got a point that there were also a lot of valies on holiday and that the capetonians were moerig because we are taking their parking. Boys here's what I believe, if we all have this "I'm better than you" attitude and say I'm not gonna greet back because I'm doing a long ride today, how are we promoting our sport? And to the hubber that said its because I live in Potch, I race almost every weekend in jhb. Go check my stats on racetec Jaco Roos 13 Apr 1992. I tend to only cycle with the multisport okes in potch because of the same reason, cyclists have developed a *** attitude! Straight!!! Yes you do have the friendly cyclists all over, but they are becoming extinct like ou Rhino population. Why are we cycling? Because were better than other? No, we cycle because we enjoy it, were endorphine junkies, we wear weird clothes like lycra or baggies and we love it. Cyclists have become so obsesssed with their rights, that were turning into the ANC that keeps on shifting the blame. Come on guys, friendliness doesn't cost you a cent. If your arms are tired just shout yes or whatever. Motorists notice these things, especially the f#ck off when they hoot at you. Wave instead, greet them, blow a kiss. Were causing our own problems if our attitudes are negative. Motorists are only going to start respecting us if we can stand together, be friendly towards others, motorists included. Wave and say thanks if a motorist goes out of his/her way to pass you nice. The change starts with you

Motorists. Now there's an unfriendly bunch.

When I'm driving my car and I wave or say "Hi" out the window they always seem to think I'm complaining about their driving or trying to cut into their lane. Kids in the backseat are generally more friendly. Damn adults, the worst people by far. ;)

I tend to disagree with the above generalization. I work in Simonstown, drive and commute to work regularly and my experience has been that Pro/Wannabe pros riding the expensive bike with the expensive/team kit are the most common culprits. And don't you dare hoot or "request" them to ride single file; you'll be treated with some real abuse. Their favorite stretch for 2/3 abreast conversation time is between Fishoek circle and Redhill turn-off.

Yeah. You're peeved that random strangers don't greet you?

Bro. Life is way too short for this.

What a load of absolute crap.

Firstly, how can you make such a bold statement when you don't even live here?

Secondly, there are countless things I have heard about the poor attitude of riders from the North and arrogance being the main. Do you even know what goes on when Western Cape elite riders go up to race in Joburg? What is said and done in the peloton? There are rude cyclists everywhere so don't have a tantrum just because you weren't greeted back. When I raced Nationally in Rowing, most of the Joburg kids had the worst attitude imaginable.

Thirdly, there are many cyclists who thank cars and stick to the rules. Realise that when you are on the road you aren't seeing every cyclist in the Western Cape at once. There are thousands and not just the few that you see.

Yes, not every cyclist greets back, but to say that you received a "bad" look? Please man, calm your enthusiasm.

Let's all say Hi Jaco, so we can end this debate. Cape Tonians have more pressing concerns like which beach to visit, once all the inland ppl go back.

Hi Jaco.

While I appreciate and support everyone's constitutional right to freedom of speech I find the op's statement divisive and frankly unnecessary. This simply stimulates an unnecessary debate of which the only outcome is to further polarise our sport.

I propose we operate on the principle that if you have something negative to say which doesn't stimulate a constructive debate, rather just keep it to yourself.

Can someone please do the honest thing and save some space on the interweb by deleting this thread?

(flame suit on; walking out the door being careful it doesn't whack me in the arse; switching to another operating system which filters out this senseless waste of binary, yadda, yadda fishpaste)

coming back from bettys bay to the airport today, I was quite impressed with the cyclists. All in single file and keeping as far left as possible...all except for one charlie...who was riding in the middle of the road..and was ironically wearing a yellow 1.5m cycling top...

do you say hello to everyone you pass while walking though the shopping mall?

I tried that once. I tried it at the Carnival Mall in Brakpan. I chose wrong.
