Following some good advice I changed from the 30 to the 10k to ride with my boy for his first ever event. Unfortunately, we started about 30 seconds behind the last of the 10k group, so had some delays in progress on the single track, but stayed relaxed and enjoyed it. The look on my boys face when he got given his medal at the end was worth sitting at the back and all the delays. Really good day

Nice!! My son did his first event by himself. I've either ridden with him or had an older boy ride with him on his previous events. So this was the first for him all by himself. Friday night we practise fixing tubes, replacing tubes, etc :-)

He really enjoyed yesterday; so I hope he gets hooked (like I am) :-)

Yip, also did the 10k with my daughter. What a nice and chilled out ride. People just enjoyed each others company and the track. She even got a prize for her category finish. Had a chuckle at all the agro 30k coming in.

What about a tubeless conversion. Even one with just gorilla tape

I bought him a 24" bike (Momsen JSL 40) and one do not get foldable tyres for 24" rims (that's 1.75 or round about). I tried to convert the beaded tyre to tubeless, but it doesn't hold pressure. So we went the green slime route and those "plastic" inserts you put in the tyre to prevent the thorns from reaching the tube. That seams to do the trick; however I want him to be prepared to fix a tyre onroute in any event :-)

I clipped a rock with my peddle on the open grasslands only 6km into the 50km race. Ended up going over the bars and fracturing 2 bones in my wrist. I sent an SMS to to number on the SAS board hoping they could pick me up. After 30 mins there was no response. I walked / rode one handed back to the finish which was another 6kms. When I got there I could not find any medics, even after speaking to one of the officials sitting at the finish line. Searched for about 20 minutes before giving up and driving myself home and to hospital. After my surgery I will be complaining to the organisers. Oh, I got a response to my SMS about 2 hours later saying "No Medical Details for SAS Number". Poor form there. What if I was critically injured.

But otherwise a nice event and good course, well at least the few Km's that I saw.

Poor form not getting a reply to the SMS. What if someone is allergic to something and having a reaction and they don't bother to reply. Why put the number on the board with the medical message. Absolute nonsense
