Thank you for the response.

I got no idea if the my rear Derailer is clutch or not. I know it is a XT shadow long cage......(Giant Anthem 29er)

I will found out from my LBS regarding spacers for the chain ring bolts as well chain guide.

Motard - yes you can, you will need:

Chain guard - affirmative, either an XC guide (top guide only) or a full guide (top guide+roller) will work. It will either be fixed via chain guard tabs or if you don't have, then bb mount guide. Or frame mount top guide only

Spacers for the chainring bolts on the "male" side or shorter "female" bolts

Clutch derailer and NW ring also works - as per Shaper above

Another option is to use a Bashguard and one of these instead of the smallest chainring

I have been running an XT RD and XT middle ring for some time and definitely needed a chain guide to keep the chain on. I used one of the MRP ones. I have recently changed to a ZEE RD and Raceface narrow/wide with no chainguide. It is a great set up. With the clutch on, it is very quiet, smooth and no chain slap at all. The Zee works well with the XT shifter too. I would recommend.
