The Delayed Passing Gap - can someone explain this phenomenon?

I often find that vehicles on purpose try to pass as close as possible to you.

Past Saturday morning again, I was on the R304 between Bottelary Traffic light and the N1. People that knows the area knows that there is an yellow lane of at least Two metres wide. I always cycle just to the left of the middle of the lane, so there is at least 1.2m between me and the yellow lane "stripe". There was a slight crosswind from the left blowing, so I was compensating for this. The next moment this Horse and Trailer truck (FS registration number) came past me with his left wheels in the yellow lane, missing me with a fraction. He was so close that the draft sucked / jerked me to the right towards him. Luckily I could react quick enough to counter it and avoid being sucked under the wheels.

Once past me, he casually drifted back into the driving lane and continued on his merry way. There were no vehicles coming from the front or wanting to pass him from behind, to warrant him going into the yellow lane.

This was a very close shave, but not the only incident of this kind I encountered on the roads.
